Words are important to Harriet Hageman. We know this because Wyoming’s congresswoman carefully uses them to get precisely what she wants from friendly crowds in her home state: rapt attention, agreement about whatever she does and disdain for common “woke” enemies.
Opinion
But not in Laramie last Wednesday.
If Hageman had opened her eyes to the unabashed assault on core American principles during the first three months of President Donald Trump’s return to power, maybe she would have realized this wasn’t the time or place to read her old stump speech.
Faced with questions from justifiably angry and scared constituents, she bizarrely clapped when boos rained down after her condescending non-answers. She mockingly gave the audience 30 seconds “to just scream it out, scream it out of your system.”
When asked about the fate of Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks when so many probationary employees are being laid off, Hageman’s response deservedly drew some of the most astonished jeers of the night.
“It’s so bizarre to me how obsessed you are with the federal government,” she said, before calling her detractors “hysterical.”
People have a right to express their opinions, especially when the country is on the brink of a constitutional crisis, with a president who refuses to recognize judges’ orders and the legislative powers of Congress.
How can you not be irate when thousands of federal employees were illegally terminated at the whims of Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest man and unelected “co-president,” who wants to tear the federal government down while pocketing billions himself?
Hageman, however, didn’t read the room, probably because she was too busy basking in the spotlight.

While highly unlikely, I wish Hageman would throw away the canned remarks and actually listen to people being hurt by the power-mad Trump administration and members of Congress who acquiesce to his every command.
The latter includes the 10 cowardly Democratic U.S. senators who last week gave away the little leverage the minority party had, caving in to a Republican bill stopping a potential federal government shutdown by giving Trump even more power over the budget.
The president will use it to keep pushing his radical agenda after handing the keys to the executive branch to Musk, his largest campaign donor. Shutting down the Department of Education. Closing the doors at the U.S. Agency for International Development. Privatizing the U.S. Postal Service and National Weather Service. Shrinking the size of the Internal Revenue Service, Veterans Administration and Social Security Administration.
And on and on, all to the horror of Americans — and many Wyomingites — panicked by the wrecking ball Musk’s so-called “Department of Government Efficiency” is taking to institutions that provide services we all depend on.
If Hageman feels like she walked into a buzzsaw in Laramie, it was one of her and her own party’s making. Any true representative of the people should have seen it coming and been prepared to explain her votes and defend Trump’s actions.
Doesn’t Hageman care about her constituents who want protection from threats to Social Security, which Musk calls “a Ponzi scheme,” and Trump’s blistering criticism of Medicare and Medicaid? Even though 75% of Wyoming voters who bothered to show up at last year’s election supported Trump, there is unmistakable fear on some of their faces, too.
Hageman’s performance in Laramie was the equivalent of Mad magazine’s Alfred E. Neuman: “What, me worry?”
Of course she’s not worried. Hageman was effectively installed as our congresswoman the day Trump endorsed her to replace one of his biggest political enemies, former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, in 2022. As long as she toes the line and remains in his favor, Hageman believes she will only rise in MAGA hearts and minds.
Hageman claimed there’s nothing to fear about DOGE. A woman who was fired from her job with the U.S. Department of Agriculture told her she worked with Wyoming farmers to combat drought.
“In a state where so many farmers rely on government programs for drought and disaster relief, Trump’s plans to cut these programs and the people who administer them, coupled with the tariffs, will decimate Wyoming farms in rural communities,” the former USDA employee said.
“What are you doing about that?”
“I disagree,” Hagmeman said, launching into her pat answer that everyone will thrive when they are not over-regulated by the federal government.
Much of what Trump promised leading up to his election was phony. Grocery prices that were supposed to drop on “day one” continue to rise. Tariffs he guaranteed would usher in a golden economic age have insanely targeted two of our strongest allies, Canada and Mexico, who are fighting back with tariffs on American goods.
The people who are being hurt by Trump’s disastrous economic policies include many Republican and independent voters who wholeheartedly believed they would have better economic opportunities with Trump in the White House and the GOP in control of Congress. They didn’t expect plummeting stock markets to send their retirement funds into a tailspin.
A man asked Hageman how she and the GOP can claim to be upholding the Constitution when Trump declares protests on college campuses illegal.
“You forgot a word,” Hageman said. “The word is ‘peaceably.’”
That brought a cascade of “January 6th” chants to remind her about the vicious U.S. Capitol riot by Trump supporters in 2021.
Someone asked Hageman how she plans to protect transgender and nonbinary individuals in Wyoming.
“I don’t even know what that is,” Hageman said. Really? She’s onstage at a political event in the city where gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard was brutally murdered in 1998, and can’t answer a question about LGBTQ rights?
So, what can we expect when Hageman hosts a town hall Friday at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne? If she naively anticipates an audience that will politely sit and chuckle while she recites a list of questionable humanitarian USAID programs — many of which she misstates — she will be quite disappointed.
So should the rest of us. Even people who strongly disagree with her on nearly every issue have praised Hageman for showing up in person, unlike Sens. John Barrasso and Cynthia Lummis, who won’t get anywhere near a live audience.
But that’s her job. Hageman noted Laramie marked her 74th town hall, and good for her. It’s much easier for politicians to meet people who never put them on the hot seat and ask softball questions.
Hageman is capable of independent thought; at least she was in 2016 when she was a delegate to the National Republican Convention and fought Trump’s presidential nomination. She chose pointed, inflammatory words to describe him then: “racist and xenophobic.”
Now, Hageman is at a career crossroads. She could stand by the man who made her a political force to be reckoned with or go down with Trump if his presidency craters.
There’s another possibility that some observers are not-so-quietly suggesting: Hageman gets tired of fighting the feds from the Beltway and runs for Wyoming’s open seat for governor. She finished third in the 2018 GOP primary when she lost to Gov. Mark Gordon, who is limited to two terms.
I encourage people to come to LCCC armed with thoughtful questions about their top concerns for Wyoming and the country. Give her a chance to respond. But if she tells you to “just scream it out” for half a minute so she can return to her poor explanations about how much good she’s supposedly doing for her constituents, keep screaming until she listens.

I feel like I must follow up my comment below, especially due to some pro-Hageman MAGA comments below. Although I have lived outside of Wyoming longer than I lived in it (I am a Wyoming native— my late mother was a Natrona County Pioneer, her father was born in Medicine Bow and raised in Little Medicine), so I feel like I can comment.
I am not qualified to comment on Hageman from direct experience (hearsay not admissable, Although I did see her in Congress with a lasso—did she think she was in a rodeo?). But now that she has proclaimed herself a Trump cultist, I feel ready to comment on her lying, hypocrisy, and her acceptance of the current régime’s unconstitutional and criminal activities—a modus operandi of the current regime.
At UW I took a course in Government and Politics of the USSR (hey, I’m old) from a great professor, so I do know a bit about this subject. I have been the Library of America’s Expanded Edition of Hannah Arendt’s The Origin of Totalitarianism. It is astounding an frightening how much the actions of the current Trump régime mirror those of Hitler and Stalin. I’m not sure if Arendt would’ve thought that Trump or even Putin are totalitaian) I’m sure that Arendt would agree that both Trump and Putin are heading in that direction.
I’m thankful that Kerry is putting out the truth in a way that can be dangerous under current conditions (cf. Hannah Arendt). Thank you, Kerry, for doing the massive amount of work you do.
Opposition to the current régime is true patriotism, true to the pro-democracy movement.
Thank you Kerry! your good writing and integrity with facts makes you so very important in helping all of us find ways to save our democracy from this cruel oligarchy. Just finished watching the Cromwell story on PBS — so disturbing to see so many parallels with the time of King Henry 8th
Well done, article Kerry as usual. Hagaman has canceled in person Townhall. She fears the snowflakes. Yes, people got loud but she was a smart ass and deserved what she got. Town halls in Wyoming didn’t used to be this way. What’s going on now is not normal. And she just keeps backing president Felon and his Nazi buddy in fact, she praises both of them we’ll see how it turns out with this presidency, but our government is being gutted and too many people are worried about their jobs and they’re Social Security. The Nazi cut over $500,000 to Wyoming Food bank. This is the kind of company she keeps and likes
Mr. Drake,
Your Monday missive has me wondering if you really believe what you wrote. Do you think UPS, DHL or FEDEX would still be around if they lost 100 billion dollars since 2007? My Medicare account was just billed over 10K for hundreds of catheters on a procedure I never had. Accountability in this country is at a all time low, the drunken sailor spending has to stop.
Remembering well a quote from my high school civics class sixty years ago: “Society will develop a new kind of servitude which covers the surface of society with a network of complicated rules, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate. It does not tyrannise but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd.” Alexis de Tocqueville
Wyoming needs to go back to being Cowboys, not sheep!
Thank you Ms. Hageman
Trump spends a million dollars of tax payer money to play golf.
Isn’t that govt waste.
I realize govt is to big, it needs to be brought down but your the one the is following a Shepard that’s leading us down the path to be drowned at the sea. Turn off Fox News and enjoy wyomings sunshine
You are thanking a proven liar who is too cowardly to face her constituents. Gullible boomer logic amazes me.
The United States Postal Service was never intended to be profitable, anymore than the United States Navy. It’s a service (right there in the name) provided to the American people to facilitate communication and commerce in rural areas. The fees you pay to utilize this service are minimal, and intended to help offset the cost to the taxpayer. Really a pretty efficient system when viewed in the real context.
The only “credible threat” regarding Rep. Hageman is re-election.
Ms. Hageman has forgotten her roots. Her job is to represent the people of Wyoming. The people of Wyoming obviously do not agree with her choices.
In my opinion Ms. Hagerman is only interested in what is best for herself. She enjoys mocking and heckling people to make herself feel powerful.
We the people of Wyoming are currently obsessed with Federal Government. That is a true statement. Ms. Hagerman, ask yourself why? Are the decisions of the Federal Government affecting the people of Wyoming? The answer is yes!
The salary of our representatives is $174,000.00/yr. The median income in Wyoming is $57,847/yr. That comes out to $4,821.00/mo. They average mortgage payment in Wyoming is $1,428.00/mo. That equals 1/4 of our gross income going to shelter. 13% of Wyoming lives below the poverty level. Therefore, your decisions, Washington’s decisions directly affect everyone in Wyoming.
This is your state! These are your constituents. Open your eyes, ears and heart and don’t forget who you work for. Is your personal agenda more important than the people who entrusted you with this responsibility? If so, you are not worthy of this position!
Well, I just had my Friday night plans ruined as I heard that Hagaman has canceled in person Town halls. So she’s going to have Zoom Townhall’s or something of that nature. Not sure you can call it a town hall if the town‘s not there and there’s no hall😧
They said the town halls were being canceled for security concerns. I think she canceled them because she cannot legitimately defend Donald Trump‘s ungodly and unconstitutional agenda. She’s a lawyer for God sake she knows what’s constitutional and unconstitutional. She knows right from wrong.
I’m also sure that she is just supporting Trump to further her political career. But, bad life decisions are bad life decision decisions. She was against trump in fact called Trump dangerous. Now she is kissing his Ring. She’s supporting a felon, she’s supporting someone who lies and cheats and steals
I guess maybe there is a security concern there. But, over 70% of the state of Wyoming voted for Trump. Why would she be scared?
I first saw the Townhall meeting on national news while it was still in progress. I’m not sure who shot the video but I’m glad they did. It really showed how spineless Hagaman is.
It also made the Jimmy Kimmel show and Stephen Colbert.
The Little town of Laramie gets National attention because our lone representative throws a hissy fit. Her interaction with the crowd was awful. She was taunting them. She booed the crowd. She egged them on. She clapped her hands at the crowd. She was flustered and seriously unaware. A very poor showing for a professional.
I’m sure under her breath she was calling the crowd nasty names
I am not sure what she expected when going into Laramie. Did she think it was going to be easy? Did she think it was going to be a simple question and answer session? Did she not think there would be boos from the audience? If she did, I’m not sure she’s qualified to be in the position she’s in.
I knew somebody that went to the town hall in Laramie and he indicated there was so much anger in the room that it was scary. However, he said her protesters had better manners than her supporters.
Her supporters were far outnumber by protesters In a state that Over 70% of the people voted for the orange one
Later on YouTube, they were interviewing a MAGA Supporters after the event. One stated that this was far worse than the January 6 “incident”. Interesting word incident. I thought it was just some rowdy tourists that got out of line.
However , I did not hear of anybody getting injured in Laramie. I don’t think anybody got arrested, they did use their freedom of speech, which is guaranteed in the constitution.
I saw no pepper spray. I heard of nobody attacking the security people . The event had to be moved at the last minute to accommodate the crowd. That could be a “here’s your sign”
Her performance or whatever you wanna call it, was awful. I was able to find a full version of it on YouTube and suffered through it.
She was highly flustered and couldn’t put anything together. When she said she didn’t even know what transgender was it was a pure lie. Her buddy Trump has made the word transgender very famous. Before Trump, transgender was just something that existed. Now it’s top news, it’s evil, it’s wrong, it’s going to destroy the world and she did not know what it was. Hmmmmm you think she would be aware of such a giant threat to democracy.
In her cancelling of the town hall She said that this is why we can’t have nice things. What a stupid comment, what a stupid press release. She was concerned for the crowds safety.
So many of the Trumpers That drank the Kool-Aid are really starting to worry about what’s going on. Non-Trumpers were scared when he got elected. We were promised lower grocery prices On day one. That the wars would end. That we would live in a golden age. So many promises that we knew were lies.
For Hagaman to fall into his lies is a A disgrace to Wyoming.
In closing, I would like to say that a couple weeks ago I wrote Miss Hagaman’s office about it costing over $1 million for Donald Trump to go play golf.
I asked, wasn’t this government waste. I know there’s government waste by $1 million to play golf. Two weeks later I get a”canned” Response of all the good things that uncle Donnie is doing. Nothing to address the issue nothing to address government waste when he has to go to Mar-a-Lago to play golf. Just a can statement. I seriously expected more.
Every morning, I wake up, thinking that it was all a bad dream and then hit the realization that it’s reality
Also a note to Wyofile. It’s really hard to use a phone to type a response. The little box is too small and you have to scroll up and down a lot. Not sure you can do anything about this, but I don’t have a computer and I don’t want a computer.
Also, thanks to Wyofile For reporting good news and for such great opinion pieces.
But be Careful and be safe as you’re probably on Trump‘s radar as an evil source of news
While I agree with almost everything Kerry Drake opined, there is one glaring exception — our country is not on the brink of constitutional crisis. It is in the midst of a constitutional crisis, what with all the unconstitutional and criminal acts being perpetrated by the current régime.
Kerry’s column is spot-on. There was national media coverage of the Laramie meeting. Let’s hope the Cheyenne meeting gets even more press coverage.
I watched a video on YouTube a few days ago that covered Hagemen’s town hall in Wheatland last week. One of the things she brought up was the dissolution of USAID by Musk and Trump. I have an interest in the USAID stemming from one of my high school classmates. She and I graduated together in a class of about 550 students and spent her career working for the USAID. I always thought that she was one of the brightest people in my class. I know through the years that “foreign aid” is one of those things people like to complain about. Hageman brought up that the USAID gave a grant to an organization in Nepal to “promote atheism.” I did a search to find out what she was talking about. It was a grant of $500,000 that was given a few years ago to, as near as I could make out, promote religious tolerance in Nepal. I did a little number crunching also. If given in 2024 that grant would have been 0.0023% of USAID’s budget that year. It would have been 0.000007% of the total Federal budget. Seems like Hageman is focused on saving each of us a fraction of a penny each year. You would need an electron microscope to view that fraction of a penny. It sure did rile up the crowd in Wheatland though. I don’t like waste anymore than anybody else. Getting back to my friend. A few weeks ago I wrote letters to our Congressional Delegation protesting the demise of USAID. They do a lot of good work. They do a lot of food aid, for one thing, that uses food purchased from American farmers. Sen. Lummis wrote back complaining of a couple of USAID programs that seemed kind of bogus to me. I sent the letter to my friend asking her what she thought. She said that she would have to look at the USAID Inspector General’s report to make a judgement. Oh snap! That’s one of the first things Trump and Musk did, fire all the Inspector Generals of multiple agencies. There you have it. Inspector Generals who are supposed to root out waste, fraud, and abuse to protect the public have all been fired by Trump and Musk. Lo and behold including the agencies that Musk has Federal Contracts with. Seems fishy, don’t you think?
I was hoping the Lefties would have provided material for Rita Panahi’s ‘Lefties Losing It’ show on Sky News Oz; but alas, they didn’t bring their ‘A’ game craziness to get on international TV.
The jobs of lawyer and representative are nothing alike. Our system of law is adversarial with winners and losers, while a representative must have curiosity, empathy, and understanding of all sides of various issues. Ms Hageman has chosen to conduct her town halls in such a way as to preclude any understanding of the fear and anger that her constituents are feeling, instead choosing to ridicule and demean them. I hope against hope that when she holds her next town hall she chooses to actually listen, but I fear that it’s baseless hope.
Hageman was asked about doge shuttering the Green River MSHA field office at the town hall in Uinta County on March 14th. She claimed ignorance of the closure even after asserting her support and involvement in the doge movement, and despite npr’s report of this happening on March 6th. She assured us nothing is more important to her than our workplace safety, and promised us she would “look into it”. As a retired miner with 41 years of experience, I can assure you that no mine operator ever spent a dime on my safety that wasn’t legally required. With the loss of this field office, mine safety enforcement in this area, and the men and women working in them, will take a back seat to corporate profits. This cut does nothing to improve efficiency, or eliminate waste in government. In fact it imperils workers, and diminishes regulations that were ‘written in blood’.
Hageman is proud of her power hungered, selfish greed, even more then the wicked witch on Oz. Her entire history is based on self serving and mocking others. Wyomingites must of forgot Hageman’s involvement in the Aaron Billion scheme to siphon off Wyoming water to the front range of Colorado. Nobody should be surprised on the toying and mocking she laid on the crowd in Laramie. We voted this monster in and now are getting what we deserved. Some give Hageman credit for at least getting on the stage vs. the brown nosed Barasso who’s nose is perpetually stuck up Trump’s ass along with the constantly befuddled Lummis. I have a different take – people who are filled with hatred and contempt just love to spar and show the world how smart, tough and uncaring they are. Don’t be surprised if this Goose stepper will have SS-type goons at the next rally to remove and beat on those who’d disagree with the Chump policies
Dark money and zero sum politics is really working out well. Boomers should be proud.
As always, spot on, Kerry. Thank you!
I would like to see Sen. Barrasso and Sen. Lummis join Ms. Hageman on the stage in Cynthia’s hometown.
Good on these wonderful citizens of Wyoming for standing up for Wyoming and against this back-stabbing, power hungry congresswoman who is happy to sell out her beloved state for her own power hungry purposes.
Has anyone ever seen Harriet and George Santos in the same place together?
That being said, “Democracy” will give it’s citizens people like Trump/Hageman/etc. when the alternative is unacceptable.
A year ago people were talking about the end of the Republican party. Yet here we are with the charred remains of an emaciated Donkey on full display as Democrats go cannibal between the sold out old guard and the deranged woke youngsters.
Harriett went to that townhall for the sound bytes. She wasn’t there to listen, she was there to antagonize. Team orange recorded the justified reactions of WY’s few remaining Patriots, crawled back under the bridge for editing and readied the performance for faux newz or some swastika emblazoned YouTube channel. I don’t know Harriet’s personal background, but the way she conducts herself in public suggests she was bullied through her formative years, and is now on a revenge tour. Maybe her god will show her mercy, because the history books will show none.
Thank you Kerry for telling it like it really is without the rose colored glasses that our Congresswomen seems to be viewing the entire nation through.
Sadly, the Wyoming voter will continue to vote for clowns like our federal reps and the rightwing christian goofballs in our state legislature. You get what you vote for.
Drake you missed the point! What is your solution to a 36 trillion dollar debt? Have you seen the fraud associated with Elon’s exposures? We will all have our candy reduced, suck it up. If you think we are better off with AOC and Bernie, good luck!
No, I’ve not seen the actual fraud, just heard the bloviating of Elon’s lies and exaggerations. He and Trump can’t utter a truth, so who knows what is actually happening, other than chaotic dysfunction? I’d understand it if they asked agencies to make cuts in programs to reduce the budget – but let the agencies make the calculated trimming; not wholesale whipping them out. We, the people, will suffer the results of Trump’s and co-president Musk’s slice and dice.
Very well said. Thank you Kerry Drake!
