Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray announced Monday he will run for U.S. House.

“You elect me, they’re going to notice,” Gray said in a video posted on social media.

“To make America great, we’ve gotta break a little China,” Gray says while the video shows a baseball shattering a plate of the Chinese flag.

Gray is running for Wyoming’s sole congressional seat, currently held by U.S. Rep. Harriet Hageman, who announced earlier this month she would run for U.S. Senate. Hageman’s decision followed U.S. Sen. Cynthia Lummis’ announcement that she would not seek reelection.

With the backing of President Donald Trump, voters elected Gray as secretary of state in 2022. He previously represented Casper’s House District 57 in the Wyoming Legislature for three terms.

This will not be Gray’s first attempt at federal office. In 2021, he vowed to defeat then-Rep. Liz Cheney, but dropped out of the Republican primary race after Trump endorsed Hageman.

Who’s Gray?

Gray became a permanent resident of Wyoming in 2012, according to previous WyoFile reporting. He began his career in 2013 at his father’s company, Mount Rushmore Broadcasting, after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania.

In 2017, he joined the Legislature, where he largely focused on anti-abortion legislation and changes to election law, including a 2021 voter ID mandate.

Gray centered his campaign for secretary of state, which functions as the state’s chief election official, on election integrity, telling voters that Wyoming had “tremendous problems” with its elections.

As part of that campaign, Gray sponsored several showings across the state of the film “2000 Mules,” which alleged that rampant “ballot harvesting” in swing states stole the 2020 election from Trump. When the conservative nonprofit whose claims the film was based on — True the Vote — admitted in 2024 that it did not have recordings, documents or other evidence backing its claims, Gray was silent

This summer, Gray, alongside the Wyoming Freedom Caucus, backed the Trump administration’s plans to stop states from using voting machines and mail-in ballots. The exact details of Trump’s plans remain to be seen since no executive order has been issued yet.

Earlier this year, Gray was named in his official capacity in a federal lawsuit challenging a new state law that requires residents to provide proof of citizenship and residency when registering to vote. In July, a federal court dismissed the case.

Throughout his public service, Gray has been recognized by multiple conservative organizations.

“Chuck’s record has earned recognition from leading conservative organizations, including multiple CPAC awards; the Wyoming Right to Life Platinum Award for his work on family, faith, and life-related policies; and the Club for Growth’s Defender of Economic Freedom Award,” according to his campaign website. “Guided by his Christian faith, Chuck Gray continues to fight to keep Wyoming free, conservative, and strong—leading with conviction, not convenience, and always following through for the people of Wyoming.”

Gray is the first candidate to announce a run for Wyoming’s sole congressional seat.

WyoFile's goal is to provide readers with information and ideas that foster constructive conversations about the issues and opportunities our communities face. One small piece of how we do that is by offering a space below each story for readers to share perspectives, experiences and insights. For this to work, we need your help.

What we're looking for:

  • Your real name — first and last.
  • Direct responses to the article. Tell us how your experience relates to the story.
  • The truth. Share factual information that adds context to the reporting.
  • Thoughtful answers to questions raised by the reporting or other commenters.
  • Tips that could advance our reporting on the topic.
  • No more than three comments per story, including replies.

What we block from our comments section, when we see it:

  • Pseudonyms. WyoFile stands behind everything we publish, and we expect commenters to do the same by using their real name.
  • Comments that are not directly relevant to the article.
  • Demonstrably false claims, what-about-isms, references to debunked lines of rhetoric, professional political talking points or links to sites trafficking in misinformation.
  • Personal attacks, profanity, discriminatory language or threats.
  • Arguments with other commenters.

Other important things to know:

  • Appearing in WyoFile’s comments section is a privilege, not a right or entitlement.
  • We’re a small team and our first priority is reporting. Depending on what’s going on, comments may be moderated 24 to 48 hours from when they’re submitted — or even later. If you comment in the evening or on the weekend, please be patient. We’ll get to it when we’re back in the office.
  • We’re not interested in managing squeaky wheels, and even if we wanted to, we don't have time to address every single commenter’s grievance.
  • Try as we might, we will make mistakes. We’ll fail to catch aliases, mistakenly allow folks to exceed the comment limit and occasionally miss false statements. If that’s going to upset you, it’s probably best to just stick with our journalism and avoid the comments section.
  • We don’t mediate disputes between commenters. If you have concerns about another commenter, please don’t bring them to us.

The bottom line:

If you repeatedly push the boundaries, make unreasonable demands, get caught lying or generally cause trouble, we will stop approving your comments — maybe forever. Such moderation decisions are not negotiable or subject to explanation. If civil and constructive conversation is not your goal, then our comments section is not for you.

  1. Chuck Gray has kept Wyoming free of election fraud just like I’ve kept it free of tigers. You don’t see any, do ya?

  2. I see Californian Chuck is now sporting a western shirt, and driving a John Deere utility vehicle in his television ad. I hope he doesn’t don that ridiculous looking cowboy hat that he wore at the Republican convention. Hard as he tries he will never be “Wyoming”. A California carpet bagger through and through!

  3. If I was looking for a candidate to lead Wyoming into the 18th century, Chuckie would be my first choice. Unfortunately he seems totally lost in the 21st century. He is still obsessed with hand counting paper ballots.

  4. Best case scenario would be that he loses in the primary; but if not, he will be out of State government and unable to screw with our historically excellent voting system.

  5. Trump got 72% of the Wyoming vote in 2024. Wyoming politicians have been establishment lemmings for generations.
For Democrats in Wyoming other than in Teton County, I’d suggest dont put much of your attention towards politics, it probably isnt good for your health.

  6. Oh great, another shill in the halls of the US Congress. Surely we can do better, Wyoming…. I guess the silver lining is that this state’s worst Sec of State will be gone.

  7. Everyone from both parties would laugh at little chucky gray all the time. That would, in reality, be little chuckies first real full time job! No working for daddy, or part timing for the state. A real job! All he would talk about? Election integrity! Because he’s an expert?? Why?? He saw a movie one time? What a joke. Please go home cos play cowboy chucky! Our dignity has had enough. Hasn’t yours?

  8. OK Wyoming voters, here’s your chance to get rid of two politicians in one stroke of the pencil……good bye Gray n Hageman.

  9. Gray says he wants to solve problems that don’t exist and halt progress on the ones that do. Wyoming deserves better!

  10. It will be hard to get a good candidate for Wyoming with all trumps lies and propaganda going against someone who’s truly qualified for the job.

  11. Gray and Hageman make Wyoming voters look like fools. Ditto the outgoing bitcoin goofball and “Wyomings doctor”. I can’t get over that.

  12. He can’t be any worse than Hageman. And we might actually get a Secretary of State who knows how to do the job. So this is somehow good news

  13. Another cosplay cowboy (born and raised in LA!) who relocated to Wyoming to indulge his fascist fantasies (similar to Steven Miller) and now wants to be a lickspittle copy of Harriet Hageman. Come on Wyoming, we can do better than this!

    1. Honestly, as a replacement for another Trump lacky in the House, he would probably be less dangerous than as governor

      1. Now that’s a little ray of sunshine through all of the MAGA gloom Hugh. Thanks for that perspective on a situation that initially elicited a “oh my God” reaction.

    2. Look Man! I agree he’s (Gray) a “Personal Ball Washer” for King tRUMP, along with Hageman, but ya gotta quote your sources my friend unless you’re Lewis Black and wrote the bit!?

Priceless my Friend as the MAGA (Make Argentina Great Again) Sheeple Sycophants try to rearrange the Deck Chairs on Titanic of Greed that King tRUMP represents. Especially during the Christmas Season.
Thank You! You made my Holiday!!! Love Lewis Black!
      Reverse Citizens United Post Haste!!!!
