This month marked the 80th anniversary of the historic day that America’s finest young men stormed the beaches of Normandy alongside their allied brothers from Canada, Great Britain and the Empire beyond to free the peoples of Europe.

Opinion

Of this great endeavor to blend different armies into one cohesive fighting force capable of freeing the Old World from the grips of the Nazis, Winston Churchill would later say, “There is only one thing worse than fighting with allies, and that is fighting without them.”

That endeavor, as we all know, was a success. But the hardships of that victory taught the World War II allies one important fact, that fighting as one force does not come together effortlessly, and that fighting as one requires long-term organization and a long-term commitment. The allies agreed, and — pushed by the instability of European post-war reconstruction and the growing threat of Soviet Communism across parts of Europe and Asia — the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was born. It remains intact and growing to this day, the largest peacetime military alliance in the world.

But a rising cabal of Republicans, including Wyoming Congresswoman Harriet Hageman, are determined to weaken, if not obliterate, America’s critical membership in this powerful alliance. Hageman and others like her operate under the misguided, or perhaps coldly calculated, notion that America cannot or should not defend itself and its allies beyond its borders. And by juxtapositioning America’s current border problems against our historic NATO commitments, they have created the perfect toxic muddle to throw at voters. This muddle, led by those who espouse isolationist sentiments and fortified by a small number of outright Russian sympathizers, has succeeded at bringing attempts to defund NATO onto the floor of Congress. But the problem with playing politics with something as important as our national security is too obvious to overstate.

Case in point, Hageman recently voted, along with 45 other Republicans, in favor of an amendment to remove $433 million of NATO funding. The sponsor, Rep. Margarie Taylor-Greene, (R-Georgia), said this about her amendment, which ultimately failed, “The American people are tired of their money being sent overseas to defend the world while receiving nothing in return.”

Nothing in return? The statement is laughable.

That vote targeted a program that provides critical infrastructure support to American troops on the ground in allied countries. And while Greene’s stated goal was to “defund” NATO, she and Hageman didn’t vote to defund NATO. They voted to decrease funds needed to support American soldiers, which is a little like burning your own home down because your neighbors aren’t paying their HOA dues. Harmful and highly ineffective. There are better ways to discuss a decrease in military spending than this.

Every congressional vote matters. Just think, if Article 5 of NATO was invoked in the next six months, those 45 Republican representatives appeared to be fine with undercutting infrastructure support for American soldiers who would be called to fight alongside our allies. And while some may say this was a small amount of money or just a symbolic act by Greene and Hageman, there are no symbolic votes in our Congress. Every vote is scrutinized. Not just by the voters, but by our allies and our enemies. This sloppy attempt to harm NATO does harm to our country.

Hageman’s press release at the time of the bill passing made no mention of her “yes” vote on the Greene amendment, but she later echoed Greene’s sentiments, telling Cowboy State Daily, “NATO is failing. The USA has been shouldering more than our share for decades.”

Those are two very different statements incongruously put together. Let’s start with the first. Is NATO failing? By all objective measures and standards, it is not. From the desires of its founding charter to the addition of two new members in the past five years, NATO continues to thrive and stand as an immovable barrier against madmen and evildoers.

NATO remains the strongest deterrent against a global war that the world has ever seen. So much so that it has been duplicated (of sorts) in the Pacific to stand against the rising threat of Communist China. If this is solely the result of American overpayment, it was well worth it. And the correction would be to ask other nations to step up, not to withdraw and watch the global order implode into World War III.

The ideals that first created NATO are still valid and important, despite Hageman’s statements to the contrary. But her comments, despite their wrongheadedness, are less concerning than her vote. Compromising American fighting forces on the ground while a war rages on the continent is beyond reckless, it is downright dangerous. Hageman seems unserious about properly governing the matters of American soldiers’ safety abroad and gives the appearance she is willing to score political points at the cost of our long-term military objectives.

NATO’s survival is a deadly serious matter. Standing against those actors who would plunge the free world into chaos is a deadly serious matter. Votes like these highlight the smallness of the failing policy of isolationism or “America First.” Hageman should know that lesson from history.

D-Day will forever remain a reminder of the enduring strength of allies like NATO, coming together against a common enemy.

NATO was born from that reminder, and its mission is as relevant today as it was in 1949. For members of Congress like Hageman, their votes will be seen as a small attempt to resurrect the failures of isolationism in our history. Let us hope they continue to fail.

Former President Ronald Reagan understood the need for allies and all those who fought and won the Cold War on the strength of NATO and American ingenuity. Addressing those who paved the way for NATO on what was the 40th anniversary of D-Day in 1984 he said, “One’s country is worth dying for, and democracy is worth dying for, because it’s the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man. All of you loved liberty. All of you were willing to fight tyranny, and you knew the people of your countries were behind you.”

We need more men and women like this.

WyoFile's goal is to provide readers with information and ideas that foster constructive conversations about the issues and opportunities our communities face. One small piece of how we do that is by offering a space below each story for readers to share perspectives, experiences and insights. For this to work, we need your help.

What we're looking for:

  • Your real name — first and last.
  • Direct responses to the article. Tell us how your experience relates to the story.
  • The truth. Share factual information that adds context to the reporting.
  • Thoughtful answers to questions raised by the reporting or other commenters.
  • Tips that could advance our reporting on the topic.
  • No more than three comments per story, including replies.

What we block from our comments section, when we see it:

  • Pseudonyms. WyoFile stands behind everything we publish, and we expect commenters to do the same by using their real name.
  • Comments that are not directly relevant to the article.
  • Demonstrably false claims, what-about-isms, references to debunked lines of rhetoric, professional political talking points or links to sites trafficking in misinformation.
  • Personal attacks, profanity, discriminatory language or threats.
  • Arguments with other commenters.

Other important things to know:

  • Appearing in WyoFile’s comments section is a privilege, not a right or entitlement.
  • We’re a small team and our first priority is reporting. Depending on what’s going on, comments may be moderated 24 to 48 hours from when they’re submitted — or even later. If you comment in the evening or on the weekend, please be patient. We’ll get to it when we’re back in the office.
  • We’re not interested in managing squeaky wheels, and even if we wanted to, we don't have time to address every single commenter’s grievance.
  • Try as we might, we will make mistakes. We’ll fail to catch aliases, mistakenly allow folks to exceed the comment limit and occasionally miss false statements. If that’s going to upset you, it’s probably best to just stick with our journalism and avoid the comments section.
  • We don’t mediate disputes between commenters. If you have concerns about another commenter, please don’t bring them to us.

The bottom line:

If you repeatedly push the boundaries, make unreasonable demands, get caught lying or generally cause trouble, we will stop approving your comments — maybe forever. Such moderation decisions are not negotiable or subject to explanation. If civil and constructive conversation is not your goal, then our comments section is not for you.

  1. I guess I am no longer surprised by anything Congresswoman Harriet Hageman does or says. In fact that goes for our Senators as well. Please people, research the candidates that you vote for……
Hageman’s argumentative attitude and “in your face” style have always been off putting for me. I will say this, she certainly manages to get a lot of press with her actions, Whether this is a good thing remains to be seen.

  2. Harriet Hageman makes Marge Green look like a genius in comparison. She has really faulty judgement I think.

  3. The US House of Representatives passed a measure on Friday ‘automatically’ registering all men aged 18 to 26 for selective service.

So sorry Jr. you don’t own the decision to step up with honor and conviction to make the ultimate sacrifice for your country anymore. Old Auntie Harriet just signed your ticket for you; and if the Senate concurs you might just be eligible to win one of several up and coming one-way trips overseas… Enough is enough— This game is not fun anymore— It is time for Wyoming to vote to punch Ms. Hageman’s one- way ticket home to pasture in Ft. Laramie before someone really gets hurt.

  4. Thank you for the honest reporting, even though it adds to the heartburn of this election!
Our delegation from Wyoming are embarrassing!

  5. Very good piece. For most of the years I proudly called myself a Republican, they were cold-eyed realists about the dangers in the rest of the world, and the role the United States needed to play. Now, there is a poorly educated, proudly uninformed narcissist at the head of the party, and most of the rest of the party falls into line with every crackpot idea he and his minions come up with. I was in Europe two years ago, and was asked if the U.S. would honor its NATO commitments if Putin pushed beyond Ukraine into NATO aligned countries. Such a question would never have crossed the mind of our allies – or our enemies – before 2016! As someone else quoted here, “those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it.” Rep. Hageman, study your history!!

  6. At this very moment brave men and women are dying in the Ukraine to preserve their freedom. Hageman’s vote was no doubt largely symbolic but symbols matter .Voting to defund NATO is basically telling Russia and China to ahead and invade, take what you want, kill, rape and pillage your neighbors and the United States will stand by and do nothing. We are the beacon on the hill Reagan spoke about , I guess Hageman and her ilk want to shut the light off.

  7. If NATO was what members invisioned Ukraine 🇺🇦 would not he in its own battle with Russia, totally a NATO failure and embarrassing display of incompetence.

  8. And on top of this she voted to reinstall the Confederate monument in Arlington Nation Cemetery. She obviously does not know the history of the Grand Army of the Republic in Wyoming.

  9. I am sure she knew what Donald wanted before casting her vote…after all, she has the position because he gave her his blessing in the election. Isolationism sounds good until those who don’t practice it become a threat…hence World War I and World War II.
“Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”.

  10. A very good article by Edmonds. I hope Wyoming voters heed her words and wake up to the dangers to our national security and way of life of the MAGA crowd before election day. Hagemann and Barasso have both proven their loyalties which are based more on self-interest and furthering their standing in a branch of the republican party that is completely off the rails than to the citizens of Wyoming. It is time to find some alternatives to these two politicians.

  11. Thank you for writing this article. It again shows voters in Wyoming what a loose cannon Hageman truly is. Anyone who is aligned with crazy MG is not what we need representing Wyoming.
Hageman, Barrasso and Lummis need to step back from the MAGA
disaster that they participate in. You 3 morons need a mental check up backing up anything cheetoboy says and does.

  12. Harriet Hageman’s grasp of geopolitics and world affairs is below zero. She should recuse herself from engaging on policies affecting anywhere outside a radius further from her hometown than Scottsbluff , Nebraska . She should stay within what she knows: Goshen County.

Earlier this year I tried to correspond with Hageman and/or her staff on the issue of unblocking Congress’s stalled funding for Ukraine’s war effort. I came away realizing her working knowledge of global security and the relevant situation in that part of the world was utterly lacking . In that vaccuum she djinned up a desert mirage of misinformation . NATO might as well be in Narnia for all she knows.

Fergawdssakes, Wyoming, if you must have a Republican sorceress repesenting us in Congress, at least reinstate the competent and knowlegeable Liz Cheney for the good of the country. ( I can’t believe I just wrote that …)

  13. She spouts the MAGA party line, so no surprises there. Her boss is the Orange Menace, who put her in office as MAGA is strong in Wyoming. He did his best to undermine NATO when he was in office.

  14. Thank you for speaking up in support of NATO, and also for cooperative collaborations in general as a means of mutual survival and peace in the world. The narrow minded, isolationist proposals from the ignorant Hageman/Greene crowd, are indeed wrong headed and dangerous along with their disdain of our federal government who we must work with not against. May they all be voted out and replaced with others who have learned from history, and understand the importance of alliances, locally, nationally and beyond.

  15. Any legislation promoted by Marjorie Taylor Greene is bogus. The national security provided by NATO is fully justified, as evidenced by Putin sacrificing tens of thousands of Russian citizens for his legacy. Deranged dictators are unpredictable and can be ruthless.

  16. Unfortunately, Ms. Edwards has conveniently forgotten that the NATO members have for years and years have not contributed their contractural financial obligation to the organization, leaving the US to fund the rest. President Trump pressed this issue to NATO members, and some nation finally increased their funding, but not all. All the gloom and doom reports on the demise of NATO because responsible representatives want these members to fund the organization are widely overblown rhetoric. Given that our nation now has 34 trillion plus in DEBT, when will we clean up our financial situation, and where do we start. Reducing our NATO expenditures is not a bad place to start. Another option is to get the NATO members to pay for Ukraines weapons.

    1. Hageman cannot see the bigger picture. A stronger NATO is good for the world and must be pursued incrementally. It is not a simple transactional issue. Does she really think that Putin wants to stop with Ukraine? We need to get our debt under control but I think it is wiser to do that with tax policy reform than with NATOcide. And if MTG is with Harriet then send them off somewhere where they can’t destroy the free world!

    2. Re: “get the NATO nations to pay for Ukraines weapons”, don’t you follow anything but Fox Propaganda Channel? There is no small amount of military arms and equipment from NATO nations in Ukraine’s hands.

    3. What is your point? What does that have to do with the current situation? What real evidence do you have? Provide it please.

    4. Regarding the 34 trillion in debt your forgetting the other side of all finances…..revenue. Adding them together the Budget Deficit is currently 1.9 trillion. A big part of the debt was caused by Trumps lowering the corporate tax rate benefiting big corps and the wealthy. He said if elected he is going to lower it again benefiting himself and his corporate donors.

    5. While it is true in the past that some NATO members did not pay their fair share that has changed this year and NATO members are increasing their contributions. In addition, NATO members have been giving hundreds of millions of dollars in weapons to Ukraine along with the USA. Much of committed support for Ukraine by country has come from the United States, and our total aid commitment is valued at about $75 billion (as of Feb. 2024). The U.S. is followed by Germany and the United Kingdom for highest commitments overall. But the European Union as a whole has committed approximately $93 billion in aid to Ukraine. Now we find Putin going to communist China and North Korea to beg for more weapons and ammo to wage his war that is destabilizing the world. Yes we need to address US debt but we cannot afford to become an isolationist nation in doing so or global problems will get even worse. Most military aid we give Ukraine is old equipment like Bradley infantry fighting vehicles (which are doing great against Russian equipment) that are mothballed. We should not forget what history taught us in WWII. NATO not only protects Europe it helps the whole world be a more stable place. Nothing demonstrates the need for NATO better than Sweden and Finland joining NATO recently. Yes let us reduce tyhe national debt but we should not throw out the baby with the bath water .

  17. abjectly stupid to vote with Marjorie the lunatic on anything, but defund or withdraw from Nato or stop funding Ukraines defense against Russia’s sneak attack is truly ignorant insanity on display!

    1. Roger. Russia didn’t “sneak” attack Ukraine. It was well advertised and build up was in the open. Exact date of this “sneak attack” was very well known. Ukraine is not a member of NATO. Never has been and should not be. There has been long standing treaty in place that Ukraine would not be member of Ukraine. Obama/Biden done nothing but provoke Russia. Obama took no action on downing of airliner. Biden sat back watched Russia build up on the Border prior to invasion. Joe just let this war start. This is Europes problem let them handle it. Which all are doing very poor job. But NATO is worthless. Troop of Girl Scouts could walk thru NATO brigades. U. N. Has failed in their mission as well. Disband them all.

      1. Having served along side our NATO allies in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan I would respectfully disagree. They are highly professional, albeit fewer in numbers and not as well equipped as US Forces. Their troops are tenacious, smart, resilient and excellent problem solvers. I was proud to fight along side them, break bread and raise a pint with them. I do hope the US wakes up from this political nightmare soon and we repair our relationship with NATO and the EU. The partnership benefits us all, honestly. Also, you may want to reconnoiter the front lines of a Swedish SOF platoon, Brit SAS or even the Italian Carabinieri and report back. I’ve stood next to them, the Girl Scouts aren’t getting thru. Promise.

  18. Very good article, Amy. On the news today is the signed partnership between Russia and North Korea. Any lawmaker that doesn’t think we need alliances has more than their head in the sand.. they have immersed their entire body in the sand! For those of us whose fathers fought in World War II, her vote is a slap in the face of those men and women who gave their lives or their efforts to defend other nations against the axis of evil. I just wonder if she, MTG and those 43 other Republicans want to join the axis of evil?

  19. This goes beyond D-Day. I do wonder why our Congress men and women cannot recall that when the US was attacked on 9/11 our NATO allies came to our aid. I recall being in Afghanistan and seeing various NATO units protecting US military and civilian staff from the taliban. Seems that it is not a 2-way street in Ms Hageman’s way of seeing the world.

  20. This is right vote. NATO is a toothless Tiger and complete waste of funds. NATO/UN have not prevented a single skirmish or fighting in the world. Complete waste of money. Mostly USA taxpayers money.

  21. Once again, Edmonds’s words ring hollow and off-key. The GOP’s stated objectives include undermining the current architecture of global security – including NATO, the United Nations and virtually every multi-national organization to which the US belongs. Hageman, Barrasso and Lummis vote in a pattern that reflects the view of their party. This apparently comes a surprise to Edmonds, a former GOP state representative, who believes that it is a “rising cabal” of Republicans who oppose NATO. Her claim exposes a toxic and willful ignorance of her own party’s political direction. In case Edmonds is unaware, her party’s leader has publicly stated his intention to destabilize NATO and to encourage further Russian military interventions against current NATO members.

Perhaps Edmonds should reconsider her allegiance to a party whose goals include undermining NATO. The lecture missing here is one about the dangers of creeping pro-Kremlin authoritarianism in the GOP, not the misguided votes of Harriet Hageman. While perhaps unusually unhinged, Hageman’s votes should surprise no one, least of all a card carrying member of the GOP.

    1. I wrestle with this kind of conviction about affiliation with organizations as it’s refrain is common on the right side of the aisle. “I am a christian but not that kind of christian rings as hollow as I am a republican but not that kind of republican.”

For me, I have read the republican platform and the bible resulting in this cat to be an Atheist and a Democrat.

  22. Hageman, what a laugh. She’s a dishonest Trump minion. I see she’s taking credit for Bidens infrastructure money. Barrasso and Lummis are almost as bad. Barrasso sends out propaganda that is just flat out deceptive. I saw him on television the other day. He was trying very hard to get as close to Trump as he could. All three are election deniers. They tried to undermine the vote of the people, and now they’re trying to undermine the judicial system. Real Americans, right?
