Alea Iacta Est
Julius Caesar, fresh from his victories in Gaul, led his legion back into Roman territory contrary to the Roman law dictating that no commander could lead armed troops into Rome without the Senate’s approval. Caesar did it anyway.
Opinion
When Caesar’s horse stepped a forefoot into the Rubicon River, the northern border of Rome, one of his lieutenants is quoted by the historian Seutonius as saying, “Alea Iacta Est” — “The die is cast.”
Rome would never be the same again. The Roman Republic would erupt in civil war, and ultimately be replaced by the Roman Empire. Caesar would not live to see it. He was, instead, assassinated on the floor of the Senate for his hubris.
The long, slow decline of Rome would follow, and a cautionary tale against unchecked ambition would be chiseled in stone. The history of the Western world became neatly divided between before the Rubicon and after.
When President Trump bombed and invaded Venezuela, kidnapped the Venezuelan president and left Americans to “run” the country, all without the consent of Congress and in violation of our Constitution, he crossed his own Rubicon. The die has been cast, and nothing in America will ever be the same.
Make no mistake, President Maduro was a slimy bastard and Venezuela has been a screwed-up country for quite some time. But changing that situation was never the job of the United States, but rather that of the Venezuelan people.
I am reminded of Ed Abbey’s suggestion regarding uncontrolled immigration at our southern border. Abbey, the author of many left-leaning books on the environment, advised that every refugee from the southern hemisphere, who is escaping despotism in their own country, should be met at the border, given a machine gun and a week’s worth of food, and told to go back home and start their own goddam revolution.
Policing politics in other countries has never been the job of the United States, although we have seldom passed up a chance to do precisely that. Our misguided attempt to “run” South Viet Nam cost us nearly 60,000 American lives and almost tore our country apart. History repeats itself to our detriment.
What will be the eventual butcher’s bill in Venezuela?
Nobody is willing to count that cost, not even Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon who posted on X that the Venezuelan people “now have a chance to be free.” Everyone is too caught up in the machismo and patriotic fervor of the moment, waving flags and shouting “USA, USA.” After all, nothing says patriotism more than kicking the shit out of a third-rate country. Gordon’s recent expression of support and justification for Trump’s crossing of his own Rubicon made my skin crawl.
Every American soldier who bleeds if we get mired in Venezuela, will bleed directly onto Gordon’s hands, and on the hands of everyone who follows Trump across that fateful river.
And that is not to mention the damage done to the United States and our reputation as a beacon of hope in the world. We risk — if we are not already — being perceived as nothing more than a purveyor gunboat democracy.
What, too, of the damage to ourselves, as we cheer loudly for American imperialism instead of self-rule in the rest of the world, while we watch the sacred institutions of our Constitution sacrificed on the altar of poll numbers and deflection from the Epstein files?
Viewed in a certain light, the responsibility for the downfall of Rome should rest on the legion that followed him across the Rubicon. Had those troops simply said to themselves, “This is bullshit,” obeyed the law and stayed on their side of the river, Caesar would have bluffed and blustered and spouted off without anyone behind him to back him up. And the history of the world would be different.
That is the choice confronting us all. Do we follow Caesar, or do we obey the law?
Perhaps the die is not yet cast.

As the great Marty McFly once said “Hey, I’ve seen this one! It’s a classic!” Recent history doesn’t always feel like it could have been that long ago, but as every historian knows, those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I was only 10 when congress gave their bipartisan support to invade Iraq to stamp out WMD which saw the overthrowing of Saddam and the 20 year power vacuum that ensued in the aftermath of the “shock and awe” campaign. In 2021 we saw how quickly the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan. My father saw the fall of Saigon come through as a teletypewriter mechanic in Okinawa. And who can forget the Bay of Pigs? Everyone apparently. When we haven’t outright inserted ourselves with manpower we have funnelled arms to paramilitary groups in Nicaragua, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, Libya, as well as Afghanistan in the 80s to name a few. This is nothing new, but I share your sentiments on this issue. How can so many be unperturbed by our sudden involvement in a nation we have had no business with? If it was really about ensuring freedom, and fair and open elections, as the Governor stated then why haven’t we inserted ourselves into North Korea, Russia, or Iran? Why are we taking pop shots at Greenland and threatening our NATO compatriots? The War Powers Resolution of 1973 was a direct response to our never ending involvement in Southeast Asia and requires the President to notify congress at least 48 hours before embarking in an armed conflict and limits that conflict to 60 days without congressional approval. Did our representation know? Are they so committed to being in the “in crowd” that they no longer care about their constituents? Are we calling this redistribution of power something other than an armed conflict to suit bureaucratic needs? This too shall pass, and with it the passage of time so we can continue to live out the adage: those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
I feel the Venezuela thing was necessary and overdue, but is illegal as was when Noriega was captured under same circumstances, to me when we are experiencing so much pain from another countrys “drug invasion” we must respond regardless of international law, these victims of the drug trade deserve justice ! With Maduro in full control of there military there is very little chance of the Venezuelan people taking matters into there own hands ?? To me our Rubicon river was the actual election of trump when so many were fooled into following him .
Great post but no mention of the thousands and thousands of Americans that die every year to illicit drugs that enters America.
The false argument that we need to blow up drug dealers in other countries in order to solve the demand for illegal drugs in this country will keep us running on a treadmill of unending action against a problem we ourselves have created but refuse to take any effective action to solve.
imo, you could have left out this paragraph (bottom), or at least devoted attention to the fact…that we (the most powerful and ruthless nation on earth) have been starving, sanctioning, destabilizing, bribing, infiltrating, etc. his country for decades. It would have been helpful to give the reader a full and honest context.
What would any of us do if our country had been under such assault…if we were the leader of a nation? Would we not all say we would work to root out the threat from both inside and outside our country?
So, go ahead and condition your comment with how bad Maduro was…so people don’t drive by and egg your house. But don’t in any way pretend that Maduro caused the collapse of his country, and that he had any justified punishment coming from the U.S.
Rod: “Make no mistake, President Maduro was a slimy bastard and Venezuela has been a screwed-up country for quite some time. But changing that situation was never the job of the United States, but rather that of the Venezuelan people.”
Wondering when Trump, Biden, Obama, Bush (W), Clinton are snatched in the middle of the night by a host of other nations they committed crimes against?
Oh, that’s right we’re the strongest so we do whatever we want, and no one can do a thing about it.
If Karma were real, the USA should have a Storm on our horizon worse than anything in recorded history.
This isnt just about Trump, it’s our entire nation.
Gordon’s delight can only mean he understands America’s oil industry extremely well. The US produces light oil and we need the heavy stuff to make diesel and now we have it, take that Canada. Using our military to take things that belong to others was the reason this country was founded as George Washington only fought the British to legitimize his land claims. Gordon is just ushering in our 250 year anniversary by rooting for the expansion of US “Liberty” to our southern neighbors. Refreshingly honest, in my opinion.
Trump has been trying to trade the Ukraine for Venezuela since his first term and Bill Barr has been advocating for these actions since 1990.
For the same reason trump justified invading Venezuela , we should certainly have landing craft headed into North Korea at this minute. We all know though this was strictly about oil and making trump’s billionaire friends richer.
Nicky could not have landed in a more friendly part of the USA!
The jury pool just elected a communist for mayor.
Nicky will be free as a bird, since no jury in that district will convict .
The last communist was assassinated by Stalin in Mexico in 1940. When Trotsky died the idea of Communism died with him. Every government that has claimed to be Communist from Russia to China to North Korea to Cuba has simply found a convenient way to mask the fact that they are authoritarian dictatorships ( you know kind of like what Trump wants to do to America).
Calling Socialist. a “commie” is lazy and ignorant. Bear in mind that all of Scandinavia most of Europe and Canada are one form or another of Socialist. And they are all doing better in many ways than we are.
Right on Rod. My thoughts exactly. We’ve intervened so many times in the past and have just made thigs worse – Iran, Vietnam, Afghanistan to mention a few.
I know Gordon and our the rest of our Wyoming delegation see where it will inevitably lead, but are too weak to standup for what is right. Trump now will assume he is free to violate the independence of every country he has a grudge against. Mexico, Denmark (Greenland), Canada and others. Our Congress could stop him, but won’t. My Danish relatives used to see the USA as a bully and now see us as a threat as real as Russia or Hitler reincarnated.
To speak truth to power is patriotism in it’s purest sense. The political powers in our state are incapable of this. This is not news to any thinking person in our state. Every election I hope and vote for change. What a breath of fresh air it would be to have someone who is as capable of inspiration and truth as Rod Miller in a position to call the shots for Wyoming! Thanks Rod for another great look at truth!
Once again I think you’re right Rod. This president has once again broken another promise that he’s made to his base and the American people by saying that he would be staying out of foreign entanglements. If removing another countries leader, as bad as this guy was, by force isn’t getting into another countries business I don’t know what is.
A guy I used to work with once told me that if his lips were moving he was lying, and I found out later he wasn’t lying about that one. Trump has been doing the same thing daily for his entire life. The sooner the people who support him wake up and realize that he’s nothing more than a sleazy con man that’s actually doing more harm than good for this country the better. Removing Maduro had nothing to do with eliminating a large piece of the “narco-terrorism” (another cute little Republican “ism”) threat. Trump could care less about that. After all, he recently pardoned the past president of Honduras who was doing the same things as Maduro. It’s all about controlling Venezuela’s oil and personally profiting off of it.
Our governor and the majority of this Republican (MAGA) party had better wake up to reality pretty soon and do something to curb Trump’s reign of terror before it really becomes one.
Thank you for airing some sanity and sensibility. I could not have said it better or agree more!
Man. We dodged a bullet with this clown. Invaded Venezuela. Comical. One sure way of warning Maduro would to have let any democrat know what was going on. That’s why it went so smoothly. I guess people like Rod would much rather see Russia and China pillaging those resources for themselves, to help fund their terror. Its funny how the No Kings crowd now LOVES dictators and Kings. And the leave the illegals alone crowd is mad that Trump brought 2 illegals back. Hard to figure out why the democrat party hates the Venezuelan people so badly.
If Maduro was as bad as Trump says, then why was he deporting Venezuelans that fled that country back to a terrible situation? I think your comment reveals that many conservatives will believe in any lie on any given day to support their dear leader.
PS “going smoothly” depends on whether you were one of the 40 people or more murdered on Venezuelan soil by US service members.
Along with the unconstitutionality of this maneuver it opens up the door for others to do the same. Putin takes Ukraine. China takes Thailand. If something isn’t done by Congress, immediately, showing what the consequences are of apparent unchecked power, we will be facing WWIII. This saber shaking doesn’t just affect the U.S. or Venezuela, it could affect the entire globe.
What bothers me the most is that he’s still running everything and the rest of us are just talking about his poor performance…. shouldn’t he be somewhere else by now?
Rod, it is true that “history repeats itself to our detriment”:
“The invasion of Panama, known as Operation Just Cause, occurred from December 20, 1989, to January 31, 1990, with the goal of overthrowing military dictator Manuel Noriega, who was involved in drug trafficking and suppressing democracy. The U.S. military quickly defeated Noriega’s forces, leading to his capture on January 3, 1990, and the establishment of a new government under Guillermo Endara.”
Sound familiar? GHWB was the Prez then and he used the War Powers Act. We can thank him for setting a precedent for our current replay of what was then a justifiable operation to secure the Panama canal for world wide shipping. Whereas, we have now invaded a sovereign nation for the apparent purpose of pirating Venezuelan oil and distracting Americans from the proliferation of the Epstein files and their soon to be received insurance bills for health care they can no longer afford. The sad part is, there is now no law, International or otherwise, that cannot be overridden by this president and his stacked Supreme Court.
Don’t forget Reagan’s little romp in a small country down thataway that most Americans had not heard of before… Grenada. It’s 100 square miles with 125,000 residents with a hideous history of being a French slave holding among other colonial episodes. Its main products are sugar cane , cocoa, and spices . Reagan was miffed by one of the world’s smallest coups d’etats that overthrew the country that had only been independent for 5 years but was aligned with the British Commonwealth. Three soldiers and 8 civilians were killed, The new rulers were Marxist-Leninists of the Nicaragua and Cuban persuasion. So Commandante Reagan sent 2800 US Marines ashore in Operation Urgent Fury , ran off the communists , and restored order. Retributions by the restored Grenada government ( a guy and his wife ) saw 8 marxists executed by firing squad. The US Marines left at year’s end. 8,000 medals were handed out to the Marines who enjoyed their tropical vacation and four whole days of live fire training.
Reagan’s intervention and militarism drew a huge amount of criticism from the rest of the planet, the loudest from our own American allies who decried it.
Here we go again …
“Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose” . And in American redneck Trumpist lingo , ” History repeats if you don’t learn from it , till you do”.
FOOTNOTE: stupid me forgot to include that the invasion of Grenada in October 1983 by US Marines was two days after the Beirut Lebanon Marine barracks bombing that saw 240 Marines killed. Methinks it was Reagan trying to use Grenada to divert their eyes, ears, and attention away from Beirut.
P.s. Grenada is just off the coast of Venezuela. Deja vu all over again.
You nailed it Dewey! Diversion throughout history.
It was Cato, leader of the Opimates who controlled the corrupt Roman Senate that instigated the Roman civil war and forced Caesar to cross the Rubicon to defend the Republic and the people from the evil Senate. They were driven by their thirst for power to strip Caesar of his authority and grab control of the Republic. The people cheered and welcomed Caesar as he approached Rome and didn’t fight him. Sounds all too familiar today.
If an army invaded the US and randomly started shooting a million people a year, killing 100k, would any Democrat rise up and say this is wrong and defend the people? Appears not. They would cheer on the army, give them free stuff as much as they’d want and berate anyone daring to defend the citizens from the killers.
Trump is the one and only President who’s agressively working to rid us of the tidal wave of drugs and gangs invading our country. For decades Chavez- Maduro-Castro have wreaked havoc across the western hemisphere. Appears that’s come to an end. Two thumbs up!
Our drug problem is demand driven, not supply. Try harder next time.
And yet Rod would never vote for a Democrat. “His father would roll over in his grave.” Rod is not part of the problem, he is the problem.
Rod, I’m confused, please tell me what part of the constitution he violated. You may not like what he did. I’m not sure yet, but it seems he is permitted under U.S. law by the War Powers Act.
The War Powers Resolution of 1973 does not give a President the legal authority to invade another country to kidnap its leader. It merely sets reporting (48hrs) and time limits (60 days) when forces are already engaged.
I certainly don’t claim to be a constitutional scholar, but Rubio did a good job explaining this was an effort led by the DOJ executing the 2020 indictment with the military providing a supporting role. This action was Maduro’s open choice, even dared Trump to come get him. Thus, we can’t compare baseball scores to a football game if you know what I mean.
The military followed illegal orders, despite being cautioned about it recently. Not good.
Following “illegal orders” has been SOP for the US military for 120 years.
Its called the Military Industrial Complex, its kind of who calls the shots for $$$$. Eisenhower warned the American people long ago, they did nothing to stop it.
I think you are spot on with your assessment of the situation, and the egos driving it. My fear is that most Americans are too busy trying to make it to payday to understand they are being financially bled by the powers
that be. I’m afraid it’s going to take literal bleeding by the populace for them to wake up. It appears that history has taught us nothing. What a shame.
Excellent commentary. How our leaders can celebrate this regimes blatant violation of the constitution is, once again, shocking! Dud these people ever study civics?? Read our constitution?? Take their oath of office seriously??
