Within minutes of a jury convicting former President Donald Trump on 34 counts of falsifying records to cover up a sex scandal, members of Wyoming’s congressional delegation and other state political leaders made it clear they will continue to support him.

Sens. John Barrasso and Cynthia Lummis and Rep. Harriet Hageman all said the trial represented the weaponization of government against Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee who is leading in many polls against President Joe Biden. Wyoming’s top two elected state officials, Gov. Mark Gordon and Secretary of State Chuck Gray, made similar statements.

Hageman, an attorney who was picked by Trump to take on one of his top political rivals, then-Rep. Liz Cheney, criticized the judge who oversaw the case for blocking certain witnesses and testimony and for allowing “slanted” jury instructions.

“This entire infuriating episode is the liberal Democrats’ desperate gasp to win a presidential election that they will ultimately lose,” Hageman said in a statement sent to WyoFile. “The American people will see this for what it is, Donald Trump will ultimately have the verdict overturned on appeal, and we must all ensure that this abuse of the legal system is never allowed to happen again.”

On its second day of deliberations, a jury in New York City unanimously found Trump guilty on all counts. The verdict followed a trial that focused on whether he falsified documents to disguise hush-money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels to keep a sexual encounter she says they had from becoming public ahead of the 2016 presidential election. The trial featured testimony from Daniels, Trump’s former fixer, Michael Cohen, and David Pecker, the former publisher of the National Enquirer.

Trump carried Wyoming by the largest margins of any state in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, and the former president continues to enjoy considerable support here.

Barrasso, who faces his own primary election in August, was quick to defend Trump after the verdict, saying the New York case “has never been about justice.”

“Elections are decided in voting booths, not courtrooms,” he wrote on Twitter. “President Trump will keep fighting to get America back on track.”

WyoFile sent Barrasso questions in light of his tweet. As of press time, he had not responded.

Lummis also criticized the criminal case against Trump, which she termed “a biased political persecution.”

“This is a dark day for our Republic and does irreparable damage to Americans’ trust in our judicial system by undermining the Constitution for political gain,” she said in response to a series of questions sent to her by WyoFile.

Governor responds

While Hageman and Barrasso have been fervent in their support of Trump, Gordon’s approach to the former president has been more measured. Gordon, notably, did not attend Trump’s May 2022 rally in Casper in support of Hageman, and the governor did not take sides in that contest. At that rally, Trump took a shot at Gordon for not doing enough to stop the practice of crossover voting, which usually occurs in Wyoming when Democrats change their voter registration to support moderate Republicans in the primary.

But Gordon was quick Thursday to criticize the criminal case against Trump.

“I am extraordinarily disappointed that our justice system is being used so obviously in an attempt to influence our elections,” he wrote in a tweet. “Voters will choose the next President, not a New York jury. This case has damaged Americans’ confidence in an impartial judiciary.”

That brought a rebuke from Senate Minority Leader Chris Rothfuss (D-Laramie), who answered the governor with his own tweet.

“I am extraordinarily disappointed that our @GovernorGordon is questioning the #RuleOfLaw of the State of New York with no evidence, analysis or justification,” the state senator wrote. “A jury of 12 unanimously found the defendant guilty on 34 felony counts. What did they get wrong?”

Unprecedented moment

Trump is due to be sentenced July 11, only four days before the Republican National Convention, where he is expected to be formally nominated as the GOP’s presidential candidate. He is the first former president to be convicted of a felony.

“It’s a constitutional crisis whether you like Trump or not,” former U.S. Sen. Al Simpson told WyoFile, adding “I can’t imagine the disruption that will take place” in the presidential process.

As a lawyer, Simpson, said, he also knows how difficult it can be to get a unanimous conviction, and was surprised that it wasn’t a hung jury.

“It’s a heavy, heavy judgment on the man.”

Simpson, who has been involved in politics since the ’60s and worked under several U.S. presidents, never thought he would see anything like this.

“After a lifetime of being in politics and then a lifetime of being in the law, I’m just surprised by the weight of it all,” he said, adding that it “leaves a perilous course for us.”

Former Gov. Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat, indicated support for the jury system, regardless of outcome. Freudenthal served as U.S. attorney for Wyoming before becoming the state’s top elected official.

“I’ve spent enough time as an attorney that I have great respect for juries, and I’m willing to say that — no matter what they decide,” he told WyoFile.

More reaction

Other Wyoming conservatives were quick to back Trump after Thursday’s verdict, which Secretary of State Gray called “bogus, disgusting, and a catastrophe.”

“President Trump is 100% innocent,” he said. “This ‘verdict’ will be overturned on appeal and at the ballot box.”

The Wyoming Freedom Caucus, a group of hard-line Republican state lawmakers, called Thursday a shameful day in American history and accused Democrats of using the case to try and hold onto the reins of power.

“Anyone who defends these actions is no friend to our Republic,” the group wrote in a statement.

WyoFile's goal is to provide readers with information and ideas that foster constructive conversations about the issues and opportunities our communities face. One small piece of how we do that is by offering a space below each story for readers to share perspectives, experiences and insights. For this to work, we need your help.

What we're looking for:

  • Your real name — first and last.
  • Direct responses to the article. Tell us how your experience relates to the story.
  • The truth. Share factual information that adds context to the reporting.
  • Thoughtful answers to questions raised by the reporting or other commenters.
  • Tips that could advance our reporting on the topic.
  • No more than three comments per story, including replies.

What we block from our comments section, when we see it:

  • Pseudonyms. WyoFile stands behind everything we publish, and we expect commenters to do the same by using their real name.
  • Comments that are not directly relevant to the article.
  • Demonstrably false claims, what-about-isms, references to debunked lines of rhetoric, professional political talking points or links to sites trafficking in misinformation.
  • Personal attacks, profanity, discriminatory language or threats.
  • Arguments with other commenters.

Other important things to know:

  • Appearing in WyoFile’s comments section is a privilege, not a right or entitlement.
  • We’re a small team and our first priority is reporting. Depending on what’s going on, comments may be moderated 24 to 48 hours from when they’re submitted — or even later. If you comment in the evening or on the weekend, please be patient. We’ll get to it when we’re back in the office.
  • We’re not interested in managing squeaky wheels, and even if we wanted to, we don't have time to address every single commenter’s grievance.
  • Try as we might, we will make mistakes. We’ll fail to catch aliases, mistakenly allow folks to exceed the comment limit and occasionally miss false statements. If that’s going to upset you, it’s probably best to just stick with our journalism and avoid the comments section.
  • We don’t mediate disputes between commenters. If you have concerns about another commenter, please don’t bring them to us.

The bottom line:

If you repeatedly push the boundaries, make unreasonable demands, get caught lying or generally cause trouble, we will stop approving your comments — maybe forever. 1. The comments I’ve read disgust me. People calling for thinking Wyomingites. How about US Constitution following Wyomingites. Trump was Tried and convicted in a State who’s legal system has been corrupted by politics. No juror would’ve given him a fair shake. Me personally, I believe the legal system is weaponuzed against the former President and it could be done to any of us. If you commented here and think the NYC Court and jury got it right you do not belong in Wyoming. GET OUT, go to Commiefornia or Corrupt NYC. The United States Constitution says NYC was wrong.

  2. I am a former 38-year Wyoming resident. I am too, a former 53 year Republican. I voted for Trump the first go-a-round. I switched to independent. I now live in Florida. Having known the Cheneys for many years, working in Dick’s campaign when he was a Congressman, and watching Liz work her way into politics, it saddens me how Wyoming has lost its way. The Republican party has gotten so lost with this MAGA nonsense I can assure you, Ronald Regan is rolling over in his grave. Between Trump and I dealing with DeSantis here in Florida, I want to hurl. I once thought the people of Wyoming possessed critical thinking skills instead of “Well if they are Trumpsters, I just have to vote that way too.” You tossed Liz to the dogs simply because she believed in the Constitution and the law instead of kissing the hind end of Orange Man. Don’t get me wrong. I love Wyoming and still have many friends there. But one day, probably when it is too late, you will see that Mr Trump is only out for himself. He cares only about himself, he is a narcissist, egotistical, and a masochist. He is running again for President for one reason only. To avoid all of his legal troubles and he loves the spotlight. Wyoming, you can do better. Remember the 3 words. Critical Thinking Skills. Something Liz used. Being a Wyoming sheep and being a Republican does not mean going down the ballot box and checking Republican, Republican, Republican. I never did. I looked at the candidate and the person, and I studied every person’s platform and character. Republican or not, if it did not fit my observations, I did not vote for them. Critical thinking skills. The Dems had nothing to do with Trump’s conviction. The jury also picked and seated by Trump’s legal team, saw the evidence and voted. Now you tell me how that is rigged? Please stop with the ridiculous B.S. You have to be smarter than that.

  3. A letter appeared in the Powell Tribune from the Wyoming Republican Party about this. I assume it went to newspapers statewide. The letter claimed Republicans as “the party of law and order.” I responded to the paper with a letter of my own, pointing out the numerous hypocrisies of the claim. But there was something else about that letter that’s been nagging at me- the idea that the difference between a representative republic and a democracy is somehow relevant to Trump going to trial in the first place. Can some Republican involved with the creation of this letter please explain to me what the point was in including that particular paragraph? Was it deliberate obfuscation? Or do these people even understand what they’re talking about?

  4. Well, it figures since they are all in tRumps back pocket. I didn’t vote for any of them and won’t vote for them ever again. I’m surprised at how stupid people can be about him and all the awful things he says and does. Blech!

  5. I agree wholeheartedly with Brian Smith. I really could care less about Trump’s conviction in New York. He should have been immediately tried for his role in the Jan 6 insurrection. The New York trial is a slap on the wrist and is simply a distraction for which the Trumperers can focus all of their anger and rage without ever confronting the real issue of Trump’s complete disregard for the constitution. Of course they also still believe in “the steal.” Trump based his entire real estate career in New York State on being able to thwart laws, as did his father. It has only inspired him to think he can get away with the supreme violation: changing our fair, safe, and democratic election results. This is a travesty. People lost their lives on Jan 6, and people who have been convicted for their part that day are now being called hostages. I think Trump must be awfully proud of his accomplishments in having such a large number of our population willing to support his contempt, his lies, his stupidity, and the danger of his supposed “politics.” He should not be allowed to run for any political office because of his support of the Jan 6 insurrection. Why this has taken a back seat is beyond reason.

  6. Put Trump in front of a big map of the USA with the names of the states removed. Ask him to point out Wyoming…

  7. The people get what they vote for. The electorate is to blame. You have to expect power-hungry people to behave this way. This is what Wyoming wants.

  8. Perhaps these “leaders” are worried that they may be held accountable. No two tiered justice system.

  9. It is a shame and a disgrace that the 45th President of the United States of America has been convicted of 34 felonies.

It is a shame and a disgrace that We the People have lost the ability to agree on the simple definition of Truth.

It is a shame and a disgrace that every elementary school kid in America has now been robbed of the ability to write a history report on the life and legacy of Donald J. Trump that will not contain the words Pecker and Porn Star—

But the VERY, VERY, BIGgEST, HUGEST!!! EvER !!! MOST DISGRACEFULL SHAMe!!! this verry, ver y beaUtiful Country!!!! has ever seen ever in ALL i’ ts glory us HiStoRY and I prommise U some very, very, EVIL CORRUPT sickos will Im not SORRY to say be PAYING VERY!VEry!!Mutch for in november!!!!!!!–is that the man solely responsible for sowing all of this hate and chaos is obviously not only incapable of leading a life of honesty and integrity befitting a leader of the free world; he is also wholly and sadly incapable of even doing simple things like Tweeting adverbs and punctuation marks at a fifth grade level.

It is a disgrace that we have allowed the bar to be set so low….. We have every right to be ashamed….

  10. What a crock. Of course he’s guilty – the jury found him so on all counts. If he wins on appeal that would be a travesty.

  11. How pathetic. Our delegation in Washington and in Cheyenne are an embarrassment.

  12. Cynthia Lummis I knew years ago was a decent, honorable person. Not sure I recognize how to square Lummis the politician with that memory. The person I knew loved and respected the jury system as the bedrock of our democracy and individual freedom. Strange how running for office changes people.

  13. it’s really scary to see this. I think this sell out could be labeled “selling your soul and integrity for votes”. They’ve done this without any conscience or integrity, SADLY.

  14. It’s not the Federal government Court, it was the People’s Court. Learn the difference.

  15. It is outrageous that a few Wyoming officials are supporting a convicted felon and criticizing the rule of law in the United States. The jury of 12 American citizens underwent a rigorous “voir dire” process under which neither the prosecution nor the defense raised any objections to any of them. The 12 jurors did their civic duty, sat through the entire criminal trial over several weeks, heard testimony from witnesses for the prosecution and the defense, reviewed documentary evidence of falsified business records, and deliberated over 34 felony counts, applying the facts to the law and following the jury instructions. The verdict was unanimous and resulted in 34 felony convictions. I respect the jury and the rule of law in the United States. Our system distinguishes America from authoritarian regimes in countries such as Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, Syria, Cuba, and Venezuela.

  16. Dug in with no shame. No matter how many lawsuits turn against the false narratives, our lone Hageman continues the march of deception to protect and adore her master. By the way Wyoming citizens, it is not loyalty to you. Give me a few things you think were better under Trump but then prove it. The latest promotional lie to fall is the withdrawal of 2000 Mules. Remember when Harriet was singing the praises of that false narrative? Well bless. The film has been pulled after those darn facts interfered one more time and a rather large payment was required to be shelled out for ruining yet another life to keep the lie going. If all of these ‘Wyoming representatives’ spent the time on looking to the future instead of the past for energy needs with wind and solar and job training instead of shoring up a felon, we would not be losing so many young people from the state because the jobs of the future would be in place. Hand wringing over the inevitable loss of fossil fuels and the efforts to get the little gals back in the kitchen does not move this state forward. Tough news to see the economy soaring and unemployment at record lows while you three are all saying Biden is destroying the country. We all look forward to you three doing something, anything to help this state that is innovative and clever. Sound bites from Fox do not help or heal a country.

  17. It is quite disturbing to see unsubstantiated criticism of Trump’s trial. Let’s have a discussion. What was bogus about the trial? Did Biden choose the jury? What then is bogus? Criticism of a trial defined by the US Constitution needs explaining. If you criticize only to fan the flames of fascism then I see sedition.

  18. We the people need to ask more questions. Would you want/let your daughter or granddaughter date a person who has been convicted/found liable for, sexual assault? Would you want your sons or grandsons to mimic and aspire to be like this person? Obviously, some of these elected representatives mentioned in this article have answered YES! Do we want these people representing us in our state and federal governments? We have a write in vote, we don’t need to go through the political parties.

  19. I guess John Barrasso, Cynthia Lummis, Harriet Hagaman are all OK and support a felon who was running around with a porn star while his wife just had his son

  20. It is a sad day indeed when the people who swore an oath to uphold our constitution in service to our state fail so profoundly to defend the rule of law that is the very foundation of our nation. By their statements they undermine Wyoming’s judiciary as well, since the Trump trial was in a state district court, with a state district judge, and a jury of citizens of the district. History will judge them all, but we can fire 2 of them in November for their grotesque failure.

  21. I realize that Wyoming’s GOP is so afraid of Trump’s wrath, they feel they have no choice but to tremble and shake and bleat like sheep their fealty to someone who’s made no secret of his desire to emulate his close friend Vladimir Putin as a dictator.

When I was growing up, the GOP was considered the “party of law and order.” And regularly criticized the other party they claimed was “soft on crime.”

The American justice system was designed by the founding fathers to be free of political taint, and it’s an institution we’ve relied upon for almost 250 years.

And now one major party acts exactly like the political parties Hitler thoroughly intimidated in the early 1930s to quickly transform a “first world democracy” to a third world tin pot dictatorship with which he marched an entire country off the cliff as THOSE sheep bleated the same fealty to their lord.

Anyone recall when the “party of law and order” went after Bill Clinton tooth and nail over the way he characterized getting to third base with an intern? Where is that commitment to the rule of law now?

99% of Germany swore total regret for their worshipping a maniacal narcissistic sociopath by the end of 1945. The Wyoming GOP is clearly testament to “those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

  22. Right on! The only way we can save the GOP and preserve our union is get rid of the Trumpers and elect such men as Cliff Hansen and Al Simpson. Shame on Wyoming for throwing Liz Cheney under the bus, still a potential US President to be, a courageous and very astute woman with good sense.

  23. Is everybody ready for Joe Biden’s war with Russia?
Have you got your kids and grand kids signed up with the military?
Of course not, you think the plumber’s kid or the ranch hand will do your fighting
    for you.
Sorry, those days are over. You will have to do your own fighting overseas for a change.

  24. Well, I can understand the 3 stooges that we have in DC kissing the ring of the orange man but, hmm, kind of shocked to see the Governor pandering to the trumpanzees.

  25. I lived in Wyoming for over 50 years and always admired the independent spirit and good judgment of its people. But in the past few years I’ve begun to question the rising tide of prejudice I’m seeing on the Republican side. Money and Power seem to be having far more influence among our political leadership (both at the state and national levels) than ethics and good sense. What has happened to the common sense that used to rule? Who would want their child to grow up and follow in Donald Trump’s footsteps. Congratulations to those jurors!

    1. Right on! And I’m glad Hunter Biden has followed in HIS father’s steps! You know, making millions from nothing. (Now let’s see how he handles the federal gun charges; after all, no one’s ABOVE the law, right?) And New York City prosecutors are all about protecting their citizens; especially those citizens who rape, pillage, and rob for a living and can be back on their jobs after only a few inconvenient hours of detention! New York’s all about law and order!

      1. See the thing is, no progressives care that Hunter is in court, because we aren’t sycophant losers who worship a failed human. And if he’s guilty, fine him, put him in jail. Whatever. We don’t care.
And ironically, this IS federal court, where Biden could actually have influence, and yet he is letting the trial go on. As opposed to Trumps, which was a state trial, where he was found guilty by a jury of citizens.

  26. If the Supreme Court of the U.S. (SCOTUS) was truly unbiased, the former president of the U.S. would have been tried and convicted already for his role in the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Article XIV, Section 3. clearly states that no one shall be an elector of President that has engaged in insurrection or given aid or support to these enemies of thereof. Major General William Walker, Commanding General of the D.C. National Guard said it took the former President 3 hours and 19 minutes to request guardsmen to come to the Capitol. I would say emphatically this is aiding and abetting the insurrection. Do I need a law degree from Harvard to make this claim. Four people were killed on that day, whose responsible for their deaths, everyone seems to have forgotten this, I haven’t! When that failed he tried to coerce state officials in Arizona, Georgia, etc. to change the Biden victory to a victory for him. He also claimed there was election fraud that occurred, which he couldn’t prove. His claim for presidential immunity for all his illegal actions are absurd, no public official, regardless of hierarchy status, is above the law. Wyoming has only one high ranking Republican party member to my knowledge that has spoken out against the former president’s illegal actions, Liz Cheney. She and a few others around the country are true Republicans, whose values are not changed by party affiliation and bullying, put the constitution first and foremost. Two strong political parties are extremely important for the democratic system to function properly and justly, a one party system would lead to an authoritarian or dictatorship, which I believe is occurring in the culture of the Republican party currently. My hope is that the just and honorable Republicans that actually defend and honor the constitution and put America first, will step up and lead the party away from the direction it is heading in now. Both parties have fought in many battles together to allow us to fly Old Glory outside our buildings, representing freedom and justice for all. We are a country that is supposed to be united working together, we’re losing that folks. Relentless disparaging words towards the Democratic party by the former president and news networks are hyper-exacerbating a polarization between parties. Their are honorable and just individuals in both parties. A president’s duty is to defend and honor the constitution and unite the people.

  27. THIS gives new meaning to the term Kangaroo Court.
Biden better hope he gets Judge Merchan during his trial for treason!

    1. Sorry, did not know Biden was being charged with treason. Been under the weather recently and when I get back to Wisconsin I know I will be reading my plethora of papers

    2. Treason? Please explain – as all I’ve heard or read has been conspiracy theories.

  28. To paint the conviction as purely political by our elected officials is in fact what is purely political. If Mr. Trump, now a convicted felon, is all that the Grand Old Party can come up with as a candidate for the highest elected position in the world, we are all looking for a change. As a regular voter, and a registered Republican, for him to wield such influence over such a large portion of our population is a sad testament to our great country. Surely we can do better. There are definitely qualified people with more integrity than that. His fake religiosity, his dislike for his fellow citizens and military personnel, is reason enough. Please don’t stand up for a man of his low caliber. Recruit someone who meets the standards this office requires and deserves.

  29. No big surprise that most of Wyoming’s so called ‘leadership’ lined up with maga to support drumpf’s criminal verdicts. Except for Freudenthal, Simpson, Rothfuss and a few others. Unfortunately the ‘sheep and cattle’ of my native State are too afraid of their cult leader and followers to speak the truth.

  30. Many of these charges were investigated long before he decided to run as a dictator who will pardon himself if convicted and dispatch his enemies as Putin does.
The Republic is in danger and our elected officials are part of the cult of Nazism. Shame on all of you. Not one of you were in the courtroom nor were you able to see or hear the presented evidence. The rule of law prevailed. So sorry you find fault with our judicial system. If he had harmed you directly, would you feel the same?

  31. I’m so old I remember when the republicans were the party of law and order. Now only Senator Al is left, and not for long, I’m afraid.

  32. An incredibly misleading headline and first few paragraphs, which indicate that all politicos in Wyoming are slamming the rule of law and backing a convicted felon. I’m disappointed in WyoFile that a more balanced headline and first paragraphs (which is the most some readers will read) wasn’t used.

  33. The most pathetic visual of the whole New York fraud case against Trump were the hapless Republican politicians in their grey suit, white shirt, and red tie uniforms caterwauling and complaining about how the poor ole Trumpster was being railroaded. At least our Wyoming politicians skated out of that duty. It must have been grocery shopping day for them. The only thing I could think of was, “Good God man, have you no shame!?”

  34. Though not a current Wyoming resident, Wyoming is my home state. My grandfather homesteaded in Wyoming around 1900 that my uncle and father built into a large successful ranch where I worked as a boy before gaining a law degree from the U of W. I know Wyoming people as generally clear thinking, conservative, honest, law abiding people and cannot understand how the majority can possibly back a man like Trump who now stands as a felon convicted of 34 felonies and will undoubtedly be convicted of a good many more by ordinary people in a court of law. How can anyone view the desecration of our Capitol by a mob he incited to attack with intent to lynch Pence with intent to overturn the election stick by him? What character traits does he possess that you admire? The fact is by his refusal to relinquish power after losing the election and then attempting to overturn it to retain power by lies and manipulations designed to overturn the election, he has divided our country, perhaps permanently ruined the Republican party and made us the laughingstock of the world.

    1. I wonder the same things. How can responsible people stand beside an obvious con artist/cult leader. The most likely reason, in my humble opinion, is they hate anyone that holds political beliefs to the left of Brother John Birch. It’s a sorry state of affairs that better candidates aren’t supported.

    2. Tim,

Your comments nail it – especially your question, “What character traits does he possess that you admire?” Bravo!

    3. Defiance. People love defiance. All the stories and movies we love have a strong element of defiance. Trump is the King of Defiance. That is the appeal. Facts do not matter, Trump just needs to defy and he will be supported. Republicans are the party defiance, therefore, they support lies as friendly fire.

  35. Barrasso, Gordon, Gray, Hageman, Lummis, Johnston: What evidence can you offer that this was a political hit job? What specific evidence? Let’s have it. Show us the evidence that makes you claim that this case was brought as a political hit. Explain what you think the judge, the DA, the courtroom prosecutors, or the jurors did that biased the case. I honestly would like to know, but I won’t hold my breath waiting, because this is too much like the stolen-election crap that we STILL are hearing from GOP hacks. The appeals will show if this case was brought as a political hit job or was conducted in a biased manner. Until then, these 6 defenders of Trump, and apparently the GOP at large, want a convicted felon to be the President of the United States.

    1. We know they have no evidence. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence that–behind closed doors–our GOP representatives make no secret of their loathing for this con man and draft dodger–but they are terrified of Trump’s wrath and being “primaried.” Having his infamous drive for revenge and retribution directed toward them in the form of a MAGAcult member who will run against them in the primary.

When we were in grade school, we were led to believe our elected representatives were men and women of courage and will. Watching them shake and tremble and bleat like sheep their love for Trump is horrific. Where is your courage Barrasso? Lummis? How do you sleep at night sacrificing everything you know to be right for this complete fraud?

      1. Expecting political courage from any of the Wyoming representatives is a quixotic endeavor. Sadly, these legislators are followers of a cult that sees violence and punishment as not only valid governmental policy solutions, but desirable ones. Thus, they have no problem with Trump’s fascist approach to governance, and the party’s capitulation to his regressive musings and acts.

  36. I’m sickened by our Wyoming congressional clowns and Governor statements – claiming that Trump breaking a law and being convicted of it is political and caused by the “left”. Politics had nothing to do with Trump being a felon. Trump’s rise to power has been based on his lifelong illegal dealings, and he never should have been elected in the first place. All Wyoming’s DC delegation, governor, and Secretary of State are doing is pandering to Trump in case he gets elected President – and they might get to kiss his coat tails. It’s high time they accept the fact that we had a felon as our president and it’s time he gets eliminated from the voting booth.

  37. Of course crazies like crazies or Fascist like Fascist. So there is nothing new here. the Repubs have officially been branded as a cult.

  38. An u8nquenching support of Donald Trump is a disease. It starts out benign, but can quickly metastisize and become malignant. If caught early it can be cured. If it propagates , it becomes terminal. The symptoms can be treated with a heavy dose of the American justice system ; inoculation by Judge and jury, as we have just seen. The first trial round of constitutional chemo was successful. Three more to come. But Trumpitis is still endemic.

Obviously , our Governor, top leadership and most of the Legislature, and all the Wyoming Congressional delegation are infected. If not treated, political gangrene can result. The diagnosis is made by a voting machine.

  39. Wyoming will vote for whoever is the Republican candidate. It is, however, very interesting that Trump is given a complete pass for his nefarious actions taken to cover up his creepy lifestyle in order to fool voters. As well, evidently Wyoming Republican leaders think violating the law should be overlooked in New York. So in the words of Trump himself, big strong men with tears streaming down your faces please send money to a self proclaimed billionaire to show your support and approval of his criminal pursuits.

    1. Responsible leaders respect the rule of law. Absolutely. A jury of his peers, not Democrats, found this criminal GUILTY on 34 felony counts, in a STATE court. Our supposed leaders in this state have all shown themselves to be nothing but political hacks, clowns, lackeys and cult members. Shame on them all. You only get one chance to say the right thing and they have all failed so badly that it is pathetic. Shut up and look at the facts as they are, not as you would want them to be. Or as folks used to say not that long ago: pull your head out.

    2. This is an excellent point. In fact, just yesterday, a court in Hong Kong convicted 14 pro-democracy advocates of “subversion.” They had their day (or maybe just an hour) in court and were found guilty. Now, they must suffer the consequences of not supporting the rule of law.

      1. “Hong Kong is generally perceived to enjoy a moderate level of civil liberties. Although the Hong Kong government claims that it respects the human rights of citizens, there are significant concerns surrounding human rights in practice, particularly in the political sphere and press.” -Wikipedia, last edited May 2024
The rule of law is a foundational principle of democratic societies. In the United States, the right to trial by jury is guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution. For elected public officials to suggest that a jury’s findings are nothing more than a “political hit” is irresponsible.

  40. The GOP has closed ranks around a convicted felon, souch for “The party of law and order.” The reaction from the leaders of the GOP, are less like a political party than criminal cabal, that cares nothing for the rule of law and the Constitution, and more like a Communist dictatorship, that uses propaganda in the place of truth, facts, decency and honor.
The GOP has tied itself to the anchor of a man that has not a single redeeming feature, and a lifetime of crooked behaviors, and a contempt of American norms.
May they reap what they have sown.

  41. Our Wyoming Repos are as corrupt as Trump. Not only did they ignore the 2020 vote- against the orange menace,- but now they’re ignoring in the vote of the jurists. They send out propaganda and lie on a weekly basis.

  42. That our national reps would denigrate our court system, the one place where we all come to settle our differences (as opposed to violently storming government buildings) is beyond upsetting, though not surprising. They must not have heard the outburst of cheers across the country yesterday when the verdict against the loser dt was announced. If the Democrat senator from New Jersey currently on trial is convicted, I wonder what will they say about the rule of law then?

    1. Diana,

Great points! Our political leaders are doing what they can to undermine our faith in our legal system, instead of accepting the fact that a life-long criminal conman is finally being help accountable for his actions. How irresponsible can they get: Barrasso, Lummis, Hageman, Gordon and Gray?! PS – I do hope Menendez is convicted.

  43. So much for the party of law and order. This was a real trial with a real jury and they voted to convict Trump on all counts. For our elected officials to say “the trial represented the weaponization of government against Trump” without any evidence is a true horror. Either you believe in the rule of law, the constitution, and evidence based decisions or you are an traitor looking to overthrow the American experiment. Sure dictators are appealing at first but power corrupts absolutely. I don’t want to live in an authoritarian state like Iran, North Korea, or Russia. Do you? I didn’t think so, so stop undermining the pillars of our democracy with unsubstantiated statements.

  44. I am so disappointed, but not surprised, by our Wyoming elected officials who reacted to the guilty verdict with the same utterances as Trump did with his daily rants during the trial. His antics were no different than most criminal defendants who feel persecuted and picked on. The difference between most who are prosecuted for their criminal conduct and Trump is that he had a microphone available which he used it to great advantage for campaigning and to solidify his MAGA base. These officials could have offered their support and continued blind allegiance to Trump without condemning our judicial system which is central to our democracy.

  45. It gives me great relief to know that as a Wyoming resident I can falsify my business records and cheat on my taxes and know that John Barrasso, Cynthia Lummis and Harriet Hageman will have my back.

    1. Done forget you can rape and grab women in their private parts and go out and have sex with a poem star and then falsify records to save your reputation. The Repukes and right wing Christians think that is just AOK.

      1. Since you think Donald Trump would or did “rape and grab a women in their private parts,” and further state that “The Repukes and right wing Christians think that is just AOK,” I must assume you were equally offended when Democrats rallied around William Jefferson Clinton who famously appeared on national television and said, “I did NOT have sex with THAT woman!” Semen on THAT woman’s dress proved otherwise. You may recall President Clinton was quite used to paying-off “trailer trash (his words)” whom he abused and from whom he solicited sex. The Dem’s really didn’t seem to have a problem with this.

        1. Not a good argument, but a common one. Plus, Clinton’s behavior was despicable. Both of their behaviors brought repercussions. Trump will be fighting his in court for a very long time.

  46. If you aren’t a member of the jury there is no real way to know just what the evidence was. I trust the system. The Republican response doesn’t surprise me. If trump told them all to go poop on the roof, I believe they would do it. The law is what keeps us all within the guardrails. Trump has always been on the outside. Our legislators in WY and in DC continue to disappoint those of us who listen and read news from sources other than Fox. Some of us are paying attention. They all need to go.

    1. You can see the evidence and read the transcripts from each day. It was made available by the State Court of New York and posted online by numerous media outlets.

  47. Native New Yorker Donald J. Trump was tried under New York state law in a New York state court and found guilty by a New York jury. That’s all we need to know. The opinions of the Wyoming Congressional Delegation and of Wyoming Republican politicians are irrelevant.

    1. Not really, nor is the media’s reaction. Wyofile plays it correctly while the slanted Cowboy State Daily cheers on attacking the Justice system. Those 12 jurors spent far more time studying the corruption of Trump than the Wyoming Republican delegation. Their debasement of our jury system should nullify their ability to hold office, but the Wyoming GOP is in love with a despicable human being. Sad day for Wyoming….again.

    2. A DA that ran on “getting Trump”, a biased judge whose daughter was making money off of it, and a biased jury. Convicted of a noncrime where the judge instructed the jury to “just pick a felony”. AA Soviet-style show trial where Trump’s civil and constitutional rights were violated. The NYC legal system has a long history of corruption and railroading innocent people. Now the whole world sees it.

      1. The instructions that the judge gave the jury are avaliable online. You should read them instead of repeating talking points that aren’t true.

        1. Thank you for saying that. Research is the best thing to do before you start talking. There are so many great resources out there, starting with NPR.

        2. That’s true. It’s too bad that the Judge refused to allow the actual jury to see the 50 pages of rules. He simply read them and that is all they could use.

          1. Is this normal or not- please verify by a legal source of what is proper in New York.
I am wondering because more and more comments are being made by AI bots so I like to check what is said.

      2. RE: Trump
        Will said it best:
“Marry, sir, they have committed false report; moreover, they have spoken untruths; secondarily, they are slanders; sixth and lastly, they have belied a lady; thirdly, they have verified unjust things; and to conclude, they are lying knaves.”

      3. Trump;s defense didn’t come with a plausible reason that Trump wasn’t guilty. I am curious what you know that the defense did not.
