The Department of Justice plans on “having a presence in Wyoming in the general election,” a department spokesperson confirmed to WyoFile on Monday. That decision comes after the Justice Department’s conduct in Wyoming during the primary raised concerns from Gov. Mark Gordon and others.
The plans are part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to send 1,000 monitors to various polling places across the country in November, when voters will decide who controls Congress.
In August, local and state officials in Wyoming butted heads with the feds after two DOJ election monitors appeared at a Cheyenne polling place on primary election day, catching the governor and local election officials off guard. Email records indicate Secretary of State Chuck Gray was the only state official to be notified in advance that federal agents would monitor voting in Cheyenne, the Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported in September.
At the state canvassing board meeting following the election, Gordon described the federal monitors’ conduct as “aggressive” and “irregular.” Laramie County Clerk Debra Lee said it “was a poorly managed exercise and one that showed complete disregard for our state laws and administration of our elections.”

In the weeks afterwards, Gordon met with the DOJ officials to discuss the matter.
The meeting, which occurred sometime in September, was “cordial and helpful,” according to a statement from the governor’s office. “There was a discussion of the facts on election day as we understood, and both parties agreed to disagree.”
Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon “had a cordial meeting with Governor Gordon, the Wyoming Attorney General, and the county clerk for Laramie County,” Kiersten Pels, spokesperson for the DOJ, said in a statement.
“We disagree with the public framing that the two monitors we sent were ‘aggressive’ or did anything improper,” she said. “The discussion with the governor and his team was helpful, and we look forward to having a presence in Wyoming in the general election.”
How we got here
At the canvassing board meeting, Gordon raised concerns about the federal government overstepping its authority.
“I feel very strongly about [the] federal government coming in and taking our guns,” Gordon said at the state canvassing board meeting a week after the primary election. “I don’t like that. And I don’t like [the] federal government coming in and taking our votes either.”
Gordon wasn’t “objecting to the observers,” he said, but “their behavior seemed to exceed what the authority that Congress had given them was.”
The governor also asked the attorney general to “examine” the matter. Those findings, however, are a matter of attorney-client privilege, according to the governor’s office, which pointed WyoFile to Clerk Lee’s account as an accurate representation of what happened the day of the primary election.
Lee wrote in an Aug. 26 statement that “two individuals, identifying themselves as DOJ election monitors, informed our poll worker that they were here to monitor Wyoming’s Primary Elections.”
The two officials “did not offer their credentials until I requested they do so,” Lee wrote.
“Shortly after learning of their presence, I spoke with a DOJ official in Washington who informed me that the decision to deploy monitors to Wyoming was made on short notice, and an email had been sent to me, but it may have gone to the wrong address,” Lee wrote.
The monitors arrived at a busy time and asked questions, according to Lee, that appeared “outside the scope of federal voting rights laws. They included questions about the nature, length, and timing of poll worker training. Monitors requested training guides, asked how our new election equipment was acquired, and wanted to examine our tabulators.”
When she learned that the monitors also planned to interview voters “to assess compliance with federal civil rights and voting rights law,” she denied that request. “We do not allow interviews to be conducted in polling places,” Lee said.

Federal election observers aren’t new to Wyoming or other states across the country. However, the Trump administration says it’s ramping up those efforts and planning to dispatch about 1,000 staff members across the country in November, when voters will decide who controls Congress.
At publishing time, state officials had not yet been notified by the federal government of their plans.
“We have not yet received formal notice from the Voting Rights Section,” Secretary of State Chuck Gray wrote in a statement. “But there has been public reporting about all 50 states, including the following article,” he wrote, pointing to an Oct. 5 story by The Hill, in which Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the federal government’s plans.
The governor’s office also said it had not been notified about whether federal agents would return to Wyoming in November. The governor’s meeting with the Justice Department in September, however, “was very helpful leading to agreement that there needed to be better communication between the Department of Justice and the county clerks, particularly if the federal monitors are seeking voting related documents and what activities are allowed at voting precincts under Wyoming law,” according to a statement from the governor’s office.
“The Governor also found it was important to clarify the role our county clerks play in the prosecution of our elections here in Wyoming,” according to the statement.
In her statements in August, Lee offered advice to “fellow county clerks in Wyoming and to election administrators in other ‘red’ states.”
“Don’t think this won’t happen to you,” she wrote. “Know what the law allows monitors to do and what it does not, and what the monitors’ intentions are.
“Make plans now in case unannounced federal election monitors show up at your polling places on Election Day.”

I will never vote for gray. He is a total magaloser.
Federal surveillance during voting is intimidating l.thats its intention. It may keep some away from polls. Thats its intention. It is a tool used by Dt and cronies to manipulate voting. Thats its intention.
No, no, no, this is not right! We don’t need the Feds horning in on our elections!
Wyoming voted out most of the crazies in August. Trump is pissed.
Lisa Kinney is the box to check if you want true representation in Washington. As I’ve said before, chuckie suck-up has already sold us out. He will continue to do so. His integrity is a matter of record. He has brought only shame to Wyoming.
It’s not going to be a question of if, it’s when Trumpstein and his lil’ followers such as child’s play Chucky make an attempt to either intimidate, stall or steal the 2026 election, will the cabinet have the guts to 25th amendment Trump out of office? Trump has hinted of big things coming for November the 3rd and don’t be surprised to see the national guard in the streets, ICE gangs creating havoc on the sidewalks and goon squads hovering over polling places. I wouldn’t be shocked to read that Chucky’s oponent Lisa Kinney’s home gets raided a day before the election with claims she’s not a citizen. That is fascism and exactly how Trumpstein operates. Child’s Play has already sold all of you out by giving Trumpstein your confidential data. The goons know where you live. Governor Gordon needs to get prepared for the fireworks, now
If they put these unaccountable thugs in a state, of all states, that absolutely does not need them I can only imagine how this sets up the other 49 for this federal intrusion. All because of a delusional madman in the WH.
Let ’em come. My ballot is already cast and in the custody of our county clerk. The choices are already clear so why wait? Vote now!
I live in Johnson County. Certification of voting machines is not available. I am not convinced that election results here are secure and trustworthy. After a career in construction management, we have the experiences of living/working in several states and some foreign countries. Perhaps the certainty of election oversight might change my perception of elections in Johnson County and Wyoming.
Let me get this straight. The freedom lovers in Wyoming want the government to stay out of managing our lands, and our guns, but ok with them managing our elections? How about we send Chuck Gray back to California, and elect someone who will actually represent Wyoming, and not just bow down to the dear leader..
I sincerely, and with all due respect for the Wyoming and US Constitution, hope one of these DOJ “observers” attempts to question me while I vote in the November election.
In spite of Candidate Gray’s knee walking to DJT and turning over our voting records to POTUS/DOJ and OHS, I respectfully note 23 other States have denied access and won their joint and several cases.
I am extremely angry that the federal government has sent officers to voting locations. And even more invasive, is that Chuck Gray has already giving our personal data to the DOJ. He had no right to do that. Again, it is outside interests that want to intimidate voters and run our state. Like the primary, I hope we vote out people like Chuck Gray.
Who’s going to observe the observers? The orange one will be pulling every trick in the book to steal the 2026 general election and his little go’fer Childs Play is going to be a willing lieutenant. Let’s hope that Gov Gordon gets on the ball and organizes the state police to see over a fair election. Lisa Kinney is gaining momentum over Chuck double-cross Gray and that has Trump, Gray and the rest of the MAGA hit squad nervous and they would just love to stunt that enthusiasm with intimidation at the polls.
To all Wyoming people, including MAGA. Please use your brain and vote accordingly. Out with the old and in with the new.
Ignoring how absurd it is to do that in the first place…. why even bother?
What do you gain from sending an intimidation squad to wyoming of all places, a place that votes 4:1 for republicans/dems.
Theres practically zero risk of wyo flipping blue, let alone even purple. Its baffling.
I see the TDS Left have already flooded the comments. I have a different perspective.
We can’t secure our elections if we can’t prove our scanners/equipment are secure. We already know election machines of every description are corruptible and have known so for decades. We also know that foreign interference has been rampant in our elections for decades, in numerous forms. Anyone objecting to Federal oversight of all election “systems” has highly questionable intent.
Let me get this straight. I now have to produce ID to vote, but Federal election observers feel they do not have to produce ID to the County Clerk? Maybe if they wore long black leather coats, we would recognize them without ID.
Achtung yoo Wyomingites, herr Donald Chumps SS squad and his lackey the Californian Chuck Gray will be looking over your shoulder in the ballot box, ready to toss you into the gefängnis if you do not vote for their cause. The orange one and his sellout minions are going to pull all of the stops this 2026 election so be ready for intimidation at the polls, threats and violence with a possible declaration of martial law. History repeats itself
Dan, love it – thanks!
Another reason to vote early and avoid whatever DOJ has in mind for Election Day “monitoring” in Wyoming.
Just another attempt at voter intimidation by the current administration, using the DOJ as a nazi-gestapo goon squad. Who not only benefits by this, but also fully supports it? Yep, child’s Play Chuckie Gray. Welcome to Germany, 1933 and your current Secretary of State/Congressional Candidate is in full goose step
Oh wunnerful. L’il Chucky Gray gets a Goon Squad courtesy of Trump while he’s still in charge of Wyoming electioneering, to do battle with the phantom insurgents of imaginary voter fraud.
Billions and billions of ballots cast in America since the year 2000, and the number of actual voter fraud cases are numbered in the low dozens. The only real problems with elections and voter integrity originate in the psychotic hallucinations of Donald Trump insisting he won the 2020 election. Chuck Gray has no excuse; no ground to stand on.
Why is he even on the Wyoming ballot for Congress?
When we first learned of the intended interference by DOJ in Wyoming’s primary, I said at the time that Governor Gordon should be prepared for another attempt from DOJ to interfere in the general election. I recommended then that Gordon prepare to deploy the State Police to stand in DOJ’s way. I repeat my recommendation.
It would be better if Gordon were prepared to deploy the National Guard, but there’s always the chance the Guard will be federalized and taken out of his command. Trump has already shown many times he will deploy the Guard for his own fascist plans, or rather, the fascist plans of the Heritage Society et al. It will instead be necessary to deploy a State force that Trump cannot control.
It is clear to all who pay attention that Trump intends to overturn the results of the coming election by any means necessary. It may fall to the States, even the Red ones, to stand up for the Constitution over the lies and actions of fascists. Otherwise, the country will fall into civil war.
Very well said and a sad day for our country. I spent an important part of my childhood in Wyoming and with several family members who lived most of their lives there. Many friends live there now. This election year will be critical in our Constitutional Democratic Republic’s survival. God bless you all.
