The Wyoming Democratic Party is calling on U.S. Rep. Harriet Hageman to apologize for calling Vice President Kamala Harris a diversity, equity and inclusion hire.

“It took only three days for Harriet Hageman to disgrace herself on national television by launching a reprehensible and racist attack on Vice President Kamala Harris,” the WDP wrote in a statement

Hageman made the comments in a video clip posted online by Gray DC multimedia journalist Josh Rultenberg, calling Harris “one of the weakest candidates I’ve ever seen in the history of our country.

“I mean, intellectually, just really kind of the bottom of the barrel,” Hageman said.

Both Hageman and Harris are attorneys by trade, but pursued different legal-career paths.

Hageman became a trial attorney, mostly working in water and natural resource issues, after graduating from the University of Wyoming College of Law and clerking in the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. Hageman became known as a tenacious litigator, largely for her work opposing federal environmental regulations.

After graduating from UC Hastings College of Law, Harris got her start as a prosecutor in Alameda County and eventually San Francisco. In 2010, Harris was elected attorney general of California — the largest state Justice Department in the country.

“Vice President Kamala Harris has a distinguished record and career marked by significant achievements in public service, law enforcement, and advocacy for justice, including holding the highest public office of any woman in our nation’s history,” the WDP said in its statement. “Frankly, her accomplishments far surpass those of Harriet Hageman.”

Hageman’s office did not respond to WyoFile’s request for comment.

The congresswoman is one of several GOP lawmakers who have cited Harris’ gender and race while arguing that she is unqualified for the presidency, according to The Hill. But Republican leaders are now warning their members against leveling overtly racist and sexist attacks against Harris.

“This election will be about policies and not personalities,” House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters after a closed-door meeting on Tuesday of House Republicans, according to PBS NewsHour

That same day, following criticism from U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York), Hageman defended her remarks on X, formerly Twitter.

“If you don’t want people to say she was hired only because she’s a black woman, then maybe Biden shouldn’t have said he was only gonna hire a black woman,” Hageman wrote. “She is objectively bad at her current job and is asking for a promotion, using a nomination that was simply handed to her.”

This is not the first time Hageman has characterized someone as “the weakest candidate” in a presidential race.

In 2016, she said then candidate Donald Trump was “the weakest” and called him “somebody who is racist and xenophobic.”

Working alongside other supporters of Sen. Ted Cruz, Hageman attempted to force a vote on the convention floor between Trump and Cruz, but was unsuccessful.

WyoFile's goal is to provide readers with information and ideas that foster constructive conversations about the issues and opportunities our communities face. One small piece of how we do that is by offering a space below each story for readers to share perspectives, experiences and insights. For this to work, we need your help.

What we're looking for:

  • Your real name — first and last.
  • Direct responses to the article. Tell us how your experience relates to the story.
  • The truth. Share factual information that adds context to the reporting.
  • Thoughtful answers to questions raised by the reporting or other commenters.
  • Tips that could advance our reporting on the topic.
  • No more than three comments per story, including replies.

What we block from our comments section, when we see it:

  • Pseudonyms. WyoFile stands behind everything we publish, and we expect commenters to do the same by using their real name.
  • Comments that are not directly relevant to the article.
  • Demonstrably false claims, what-about-isms, references to debunked lines of rhetoric, professional political talking points or links to sites trafficking in misinformation.
  • Personal attacks, profanity, discriminatory language or threats.
  • Arguments with other commenters.

Other important things to know:

  • Appearing in WyoFile’s comments section is a privilege, not a right or entitlement.
  • We’re a small team and our first priority is reporting. Depending on what’s going on, comments may be moderated 24 to 48 hours from when they’re submitted — or even later. If you comment in the evening or on the weekend, please be patient. We’ll get to it when we’re back in the office.
  • We’re not interested in managing squeaky wheels, and even if we wanted to, we don't have time to address every single commenter’s grievance.
  • Try as we might, we will make mistakes. We’ll fail to catch aliases, mistakenly allow folks to exceed the comment limit and occasionally miss false statements. If that’s going to upset you, it’s probably best to just stick with our journalism and avoid the comments section.
  • We don’t mediate disputes between commenters. If you have concerns about another commenter, please don’t bring them to us.

The bottom line:

If you repeatedly push the boundaries, make unreasonable demands, get caught lying or generally cause trouble, we will stop approving your comments — maybe forever. Such moderation decisions are not negotiable or subject to explanation. If civil and constructive conversation is not your goal, then our comments section is not for you.

  1. If it wasn’t for DEI the Supreme Court would still be made up of nine privileged white men. Rather, that would be eight plus one that thinks he is a white and privileged.

  2. Democrat joke of day. If a ventriloquist changes dummy out in middle of the show. It still same person controlling the dummy. And that folks is exactly what we have going on with national democrat party

  3. Yes, Harris is a DEI (Didn’t Earn It) hire and Biden said so when he picked her for VP by limiting his choices based on their immutable characteristics instead of their qualifications.

  4. What does Harriet have against diversity, equity, and inclusion? In Latin, DEI spells “of God.” In our culture, we take pride in our diversity, and Wyoming is the equality state, and only white nationalists and white supremacists deride inclusion.

  5. I’m confused. The Democrats proudly endorse DEI. Yet they consider it an insult to say someone is a DEI hire. Why? Because even the Democrats know DEI is a sham, meant to reward their voter base and give them positions of real political power to foist more harmful, blockheaded and frankly un constitutional to unqualified by politically loyal people. Here’s the answer: abolish DEI and you’ll never her Congresswoman Hageman or anyone else reference it, and we can stop worrying that when we see the beneficiaries of DEI in a professional position, there is a real chance they are _Not_ actually qualified.

    1. Liz Cheney was the last of the Wyoming Constitutional Republicans and she got kicked out of the Party

  6. Congresswoman Hageman is exactly right, if the WDC would care to check Harris’s real record and positions on key issues which MSM is busy scrubbing from the internet. Or perhaps her word salad, nonsensical and barely understandable public speaking garble. I always chuckle at how Dems divert and distract with personal attacks rather than issue related discussions. As proponents of DEI and ESG their contrived umbrage at the exercise of those far left doctrines when it comes to Harris (and numerous others in Obama’s third term) undermines their handwringing, and cuts the legs out from under their pushing DEI–which by it’s hypocritical left wing nature has zero to do with meritocracy. But then again, they did install (and then throw unceremoniously to the curb) that “sharp as a tack” Biden as front man for the Obama team, so perhaps that makes up for their support of Harris. Chuckling.

  7. Reading all of the comments below, criticizing Hageman’s statement regarding Harris being a “DEI hire,” I will point out that President Biden stated his choice for Vice President will be a “black woman.” That’s hardly an endorsement of “Equal Opportunity” or a commitment to select a best qualified or capable individual for the the job!

  8. Harris is not a ” black woman ” she is mixed race, same as Obama. As far as intelligence goes do some checking regarding her career as the Attorney General of California.

  9. This from a DEID Trump hire (Do Everything I Demand) and I apologize for the image that just flashed before so many eyes.

  10. DEI – a contraction for what used to be America’s melting pot but in today’s corporate world, it is just another groups of words flaunting racism, class structure, carpetbagging, extortion, incompetence over merit and preferential hiring. Biden himself said he was going to choose a black woman. Unfortunately he chose s woman who had herself chosen preferential treatment to get ahead rather than good works. One of the most divisive Attorney generals from California, her staff fled the AG’s office as s result of her rank, vicious attacks on employees. Her sense of entitlement eroded the mission of selfless commitment and nothing has changed. Anyone who thinks Harris has somehow worked her way through the years by applying her intelligence and innate abilities to issues, projects or even relationships needs to actually tease the facts from the glowing puff pieces that flow from the state propaganda media and rethink their assessment.

Harris’ statement that little girls see her and think they can do the same. Really? What about little boys? Why does she insists that there are barriers to women? Does she really think that she’s at the top of the pile?

She is not at the top of the pile. She is another dangerous communist who despises Americas, our freedom, our society, our education system (look what she did in California), our Second Amendment. And it doesn’t stop there.

From Hsrris’ pen statements and her vitriolic dedication to progressive states: Harris has vowed to mandate buybacks of weapons, destroy the independence of the Supreme Court, eliminate the filibuster so that she can pass her vision of the green deal, outlaw gas powered machines by 2030, provide free medical, college tuition and housing to “illegals aliens” (laws controlling immigration will be eliminated which criminalize undocumented entry), she cast the tie breaking vote on the 1.9 trillion dollar bill which will see our taxes rise after the next election (which includes a 46.% estate tax, 30% or higher tax on unrealized capital gain ( that inherited property and other assets will become s source of flowing cash to the government), abortion will be federally protected up to the birth of the child, police WILL be defunded (reimagined), she crafted the ngo circus to transport and direct illegals into our country from the start (she directed mayorkis to enact language change from illegal aliens to undocumented). And there is much more.

The worst outcome of her presence as s political personas is her complicity in camouflaging the mental difficulties Biden has encountered from the very beginning. I believe she used her political clout and has been forcing Biden to sign executive orders he would never have agreed to in his younger years. Anyone who has been responsibly following the acts in Washington watched Biden make 180 degree shifts in policy decisions.

Harris is not only incompetent ( does not understand loyalty), she is Dangerous daughter of an extreme Marxist father. Her mother’s visa had expired before she was born-she us an anchor baby a eligible to run. But with all laws democrats find inconvenient, she will enforce the bias surrounding her.

  11. Whether you like Harris or not, just admit that she’s a DEI hire. And that that is going to overshadow and exemplify why touting a person’s gender or ethnicity, over their accomplishments, is a bad idea

  12. I don’t know who either Jean M Skarset or Larry Skow is but I didn’t ” infiltrate” Wyoming, I was born here.

  13. When was Harris “hired”?
She’s been ELECTED to 4 different positions.
HH, you are an embarrassment to the good-hearted, honest, kind people of Wyoming.

  14. I am very proud that Harriet Hageman is representing me in the House of Representatives.
    Barasso too. Lumpish is so-so.
Harriet is a bulldog! She is golden.
If you never heard her speak, go to YouTube. I know… OH THE HORROR! Reality might replace your thoughts of a perfect utopia.

  15. The black hearted orb, Hageman, must be extremely jealous of VP Harris. Harriet will never be anybody’s VP pic (Trump wouldn’t even be that stupid) much lest a Prez candidate. I can’t think of anyone who’d be a worse example of backwoods thrillbilly Wyoming to send to DC then Rep. Hageman. If we wanted a low IQ racist to represent us, guess Hageman is the one though.

  16. I thought it was kind of odd when last winter the Wyoming Legislature spent so much time on defunding the DEI office at the University of Wyoming. Something that has been there for decades I think. Then I remembered that the Republicans have that Central Command Office that sends out coded messages to all the faithful to get busy on their pet projects, obliterating DEI programs being one of them. Par for the coarse. I think that the Republicans are having a hard time coming up with an offense against Harris that isn’t misogynistic or racist.

  17. V. P Harris was put in charge of $42.5 BILLION to get rural America hooked up/improve access. To DATE. Not 1 American has been hooked up. Zero improvement. But Mayor Pete spent $7.5 billion and got 7 fast chargers installed in all of America!!! She failed as Border Czar. Failed at the internet connection. All told $50 BILLION SPENT! Where the money? Why give her any more chances.

    1. Might want to expand your news sources beyond Tucker. Might be too painful. Continue listening to old stories about Infrastructure week every week for the 4 years under Trump that produced nothing more than a kindergarten bridge made of pop cycle sticks.

      1. I agree with Larry Skow. The proof is in the results.
And who the heck is Tucker? Maybe I should find him instead of getting all my political news from WSJ.

  18. Hageman represents the cross section of your typical MAGA Trump worshipper: mean, despicable, a racist plus truthfully, one or two rungs down on the ladder of intelligence. A true embarrassment to the State of Wyoming. Speaking of Wyoming, who can forget Hageman’s clandestine efforts to siphon Wyoming’s water to Colorado via the Aaron Million scheme. If anybody thinks Hageman is “for” them and our State, then you’re seriously fooling yourself…she’d sell popcorn at her mother’s funeral if given the chance

  19. the last time I agreed with Hageman was her comments about Trump being the weakest candidate and called him “somebody who is racist and xenophobic”. The quest for power has now further weakened an already damaged spine caused by flip flopping for power. Now Hageman becomes the weak racist and xenophobe. While Harriet was using her law degree to make sure her corporate overlords were able to destroy our wildlife corridors, clean air and water, Vice President Harris was working for justice in areas that dwarf Wyoming. VP Harris is the most qualified presidential candidate in a very long time and maybe your work should be on JD Vance dismissing you as an unqualified cat lady.

  20. Oh my, Harriet is showing her Wyoming culture. Formally she represented polluters and water rights stealers and long been anti US government no matter who was in office. She has been a strong presence in Congress representing Russian misinformation in committees and is pro Putin. Wyoming and Harriet back a convicted felon, twice impeached, adjudicated sexual predator that also owes 400+ million dollars in fines and penalties for running a fraudulent business. Also, up coming trials for election interference and stealing and concealing Top Secret and classified documents. So who is unqualified for office? It is quite the story how a NYC / Florida manure salesman can be considered a leader. Along with the manure stench, Wyoming’s dung beetles thrive. Not seeing anything resembling the Golden Rule or decency here.

  21. This woman stabbed one of her dear friends out of political ambition. She joined the Trump cult of bigotry and intolerance to further her political ambition. Every time she opens her mouth I cringe. As an 85 year old resident, I find the Trump cult a blight in our state, including this toxic woman.

  22. “Intellectually, just really kind of the bottom of the barrel…I think she was a DEI hire.”
Wow. In one sentence, two clauses, Congresswoman Harriet Hageman demonstrated that she is fully a racist, and seriously cut from the same cloth as those who lead resistance to Brown v Board, voting rights, and equal opportunity in the 1960s. Break that sentence down; conjoining “intellectually’ with “bottom of the barrel” to “DEI hire” is as clear a statement of African American inferiority as any I have read/heard in a very long time. Hageman’s statement is the same old tired racist trope used against governmental hires of African Americans, Latinos, and women in fresh language; instead of using the complaint of Harris being an “affirmative action baby” , DEI and low-level intellectual capacity is used but the nuance remains the same.

    1. Exactly what I was thinking, but said so well by you.
“I mean, intellectually, just really kind of the bottom of the barrel,” is what we heard Whites say about Blacks in the ’50’s and ’60’s (and before, if we were around). It hurts to hear prominent White folks make such backwards statements.

        1. Ms Skarset No Ma’am, I can’t and won’t speak for anyone else, but frankly it’s statements like the one you made that are hurting this country. We need to move away from “pigeon holing” people and move toward looking beyond color, race, religion, politics, gender etc… and realize that people are just like you or my neighbor or me. Period! Move along, get in the 21st century.

  23. The last thing Wyoming needs is for our U.S. Representative, Harriet Hagerman to open her mouth and prove to all listening that Wyoming does have a profound level of racism, hatred and stupidity sprinkled heavily throughout our population. Ms. Hagerman doesn’t have the common decency to respect a fellow human being, even if she looks differently than yourself. Wyoming can do better.

  24. So Hageman describes Harris as “kind of the bottom of the barrel,” does she? I really don’t see how Harris could possibly be there simply because Hageman is already occupying every square inch of that particular space. What educational deficiency or sociological abnormality has turned so many Wyoming voters into reactionary Trump cultists deaf to all appeals to logical reason?

  25. Our congressional delegation can’t find legitimate talking points to contest a democrat, so they just cut down their opposition down with personal attacks. And, as in the turquoise lady’s history, it applies to anyone she dislikes at the time, as in her previous Trump comments. And while the RNC convention touts “bringing down the temperature” dividing our country, our delegation steps it up by throwing more meadow muffins. It’s obvious that VP Harris’s addition to the ticket scares them because she is so qualified and effective….just when they thought they had the election of their aged illiterate autocrat in the bag. More power to you Kamala – I’d love to see you debate Hageman and show her what true intellect actually looks like…..but, I think HH might rather stay behind her horse.

  26. Hagamen could only hope to be half the person Harris is!!!!!
Too bad she can is continually ugly every time she opens her mouth. She is a disgrace to Wyoming!!!!! Like so many Trumplikins, they only know “mean and divisiveness”comments!
Nothing productive, no forward Possitive thinking!!!! We pray to be done with Hageman !!!!

  27. Maybe if she had dodged the draft, inherited a business from her father, bankrupted that business and 6 others, and had a reality show she would be more qualified?

  28. Senator Hageman is spot on 💯. VP Harris is completely inept in her position and it’s sickening that she is still there. I don’t care if she is purple, she sorely lacks any leadership skills. Trump 2024 MAGA

    1. You obviously have no connection to reality. HH is not a Senator and she is a disgrace to the State of Wyoming. Not sure where you live, but you appear to be an uninformed troll.

    1. No she is not. Her career is absolutely hinged on the men she hooked up with. She melts down into a fit of rage when questioned. There is nothing strong about harris except her smell.

  29. Couldn’t it be said that Hag is also a DEI hire? She is not working for Wyoming but for Trump.

    1. You are right: Hageman is nothing but a Trump appointee. Her most important qualification – a willingness to endorse his lie that the election was stolen from him.

  30. To come out with a comment like that shows HH is really scared that Kamala is going to win! Already Republican racists are running scared, why Kamala pulled ahead of Trump by two points th a couple of days

    1. While democrat carpetbaggers are hiding the violations of election law. Harris has not one primary vote. Because she is despicable. Ms Hageman is absolutely right. Harris is aDEI hire. And everyone knows it.

  31. Rep. Hageman abandoned any claim to intellectual rigor when she began spreading the lie that the 2020 election was stolen – an insult to every Republican poll worker, county clerk, and secretary of state across our nation. Having left facts and logic behind in the service of her master, she’s hardly in a position to assess the intellectual capacity of someone as accomplished as VP Harris.

  32. Hageman is a generally obtuse and unsettling weirdo, who ran as an “R” in the unfortunately reddest state in America. She’s ineffective with no real solutions, and should sit this one out. If anyone was hired for her race (albeit racism) and not skills, it’s that political troll.

  33. Well, Harris is one of the most intellectually weakest people in politics. Adam Schiff is also, as Jerry Nadler is also a clown. But, look which states elected them, Calif. for Harris and Schiff, NY for Nadler.

  34. What a total embarrassment to have Hageman as Wyoming’s lone representative in Congress. Trump must be proud of his pick as she spews venom the likes of Marjorie Taylor Greene. Wyoming needs to get rid of her, but probably won’t.

  35. How unfortunate for an elected who comes from the equality state to sling mud in quite that way.
All voters should reconsider who is elected this time around.
This is unacceptable behavior and an embarrassment. The truth about who you are as a person is now out in the open.

  36. As I understand it, DEI actions are meant to bring to the table (by hiring or otherwise encouraging) people who might not otherwise have gotten a look for reasons of race, gender, socioeconomic class, and so on. By that description, D.J. Vance getting into Yale is the very epitome of DEI. Sometimes you get a good person by such efforts, sometimes not.

  37. The only reason Hageman was elected is because she licks Trumps boots. You can do better Wyoming.

    1. As John Adams said, “Facts are stubborn things.” Kamala Harris went to the mediocre UC Hastings Law School where 81.4% of graduates pass the Bar Exam. She was in the 18.6% that failed. She required multiple attempts to pass, so Congresswoman Hageman is speaking the truth. As a Senator Harris authored 1 bill, only one and it was to commemorate the 1928 collapse of the St. Francis Dam. Not exactly an impressive legislative record. What has she done as VP? She was put in charge of the border, and we had by a huge margin the worst situation at the border in our history. She is so abusive of her staff more than 90% have left. When she ran for president herself, she dropped out because she was stuck at 1%, but the party that says you need to support them to prevent the end of Democracy took this 1%’er and anointed her to be the next Presidential in less than 48 hours without even a single ballot cast or a public meeting or discussion. Honestly, Harris supporters should all ask themselves why they are supporting her? Finally, the Democrats support DEI, so why then is it bad to say someone is a DEI hire? Oh yeah, they are complete hypocrites and know DEI is simply a way to elevate their supporters who lack the talent and achievements to earn their positions.

      1. Facts are a stubborn thing. Maybe you should look up how many staff members left Trump. While you’re at it, look up Trumps health care package-you know, the empty pages.

    2. Once again the Democrats on the site demonstrate their membership in the Psychic Friends Network wasn’t worth the money. I voted for HH, and I am a very reluctant supporter of Trump. However, when you see the alternative, first a man who lurched from disaster from disaster, massive deficits, sky high inflation, the deadly debacle of the Afghanistan retreat etc., a man so obviously cognitively out of it, and unable to even perambulate who need cue cards to lead him to the stage and his wife to lead him back, to a woman who when running for the office she has been given without any legal process dropped out when she couldn’t break 1% in the primaries, and now without any public process, much less a single vote in less than 48 is the new candidate that says the other one is the threat to end democracy. For you Democrats, can you name one small d democratic element of Harris’s coronation? Please, I’d like to hear it.

  38. For Hageman to call out Harris with racisist remarks and calling her “ intellectually bottom of the barrel “, is the pot calling the kettle black! Hageman is the last wood scraping on that barrel ! Shes done nothing in her position for anyone except kiss the maga party’s butt. What a sham she’s in there rather than Liz Cheney, who is one at the top of the barrel & constantly worked for the people! Get out of DC Harriet, NO ONE wants you there taking up space & taking money for doing nothing, like all of your “ comrades”.

    1. Patricia Crane – Couldn’t agree more. Hageman is an embarassment to Wyoming. Yuck.

          1. Just because someone isn’t originally “from” Wyoming doesn’t mean they can’t have decent human values and treat people with respect. I’ve lived her for 20 years and consider Wyoming my home state. Saying someone isn’t from Wyoming is not actually an insult. I still hold out hope that we will live up to our “Equality State” motto.

        1. Do you even know the definition of woke? It means being aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues especially of racial and social injustice.

I love being “woke”. It’s much nicer than being an ignorant and cruel troll.

        2. Yes, Hageman is a total embarrassment to Wyoming. She needs to go. She pontificated against Trump until she saw how she could tag onto his coat tails. Gone seem to be the days of focusing on facts and platforms. Grade school name calling and bullying is in. Sadly….my mama taught me to do better than that. Too bad others didn’t have that upbringing.

        3. Jean, these people have Zero political power and as mentioned many are from out of state. The have nothing better to do than complain because they are completely irrelevant.
