Even smart politicians make stupid mistakes. That’s how they lose political power; that’s how they get un-elected.
Opinion
Here’s how it happens. An elected official deludes himself or herself into thinking they are unassailable, that their seat is safe because they’ve never been seriously challenged. This is political hubris and leads to mistakes. They finally cross a line, push the envelope too far and run into political Kryptonite.
Those officials’ hubris reaches the point where they tell their constituents, “We don’t give a rat’s ass what you think, we’re gonna do what we want.” This attitude toward their jobs and their constituents is the graveyard of political ambition.
All three members of our Wyoming congressional delegation are smart politicians. Their election records bear this out. But they are going down a path that will end up in their political doom. So we should give them fair warning.
Perhaps the clearest warning that our delegation could receive is a reminder of what happened to U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney, an outcome that they themselves, to one extent or another, contributed to. Cheney’s seat seemed secure and her popularity bulletproof until she acted in a way that was intolerable to Wyoming’s electorate. Voters turned on Cheney as quickly as a striking rattlesnake, and her political career in the Cowboy State came to an abrupt end.
U.S. Sens. John Barrasso and Cynthia Lummis, and Rep. Harriet Hageman, through their unwavering support for Trump, seemingly enjoy secure places in Wyoming politics. But if they slavishly follow Trump in his zeal to sell public lands in the West, they’ll face a political firestorm every bit as hot as the one that scorched Cheney.
Maybe they misread the room and don’t grasp how their constituents feel about the half of the Big Empty that is in public lands. Sure, we cuss federal land management agencies up one side and down the other. We were taught that by our parents and grandparents. But they also taught us that we can hunt, fish, camp, rockhound and generally goof around on our public land without having to beg permission from anyone.
The public domain in Wyoming is interwoven into the fabric of our land ethic, an ethic that is passed down from one generation to another. It is, quite simply, how we think of ourselves and the landscape around us. It’s how we think of our home.
When politicians — whether our own representatives or an eastern businessman like Trump — try to tell us that we are wrong, then we get pissed off. When they say that large swaths of our home should be sold to the highest bidder, our bullshit detectors go off and our hackles go up. And then we vote. Just ask Cheney.
The public land issue cuts across partisan boundaries and bridges demographics in Wyoming. It is where the right wing and the left wing meet on common ground. For a politician to ignore or discount the depth of this ethos in the electorate is a grave mistake. To call it a silly overreaction is political suicide.
I think our delegation is feeling the hot blast of pushback against Trump’s misguided notion of disposing of public land in Wyoming. And that pushback is coming from folks who, up until now, thought our delegation could do no wrong. I think it’s dawning on them that this is a Rubicon they can’t cross if they want to keep their election certificates.
It will be instructive to watch how the delegation deals with this crisis.
I’d suggest that they pay close attention to the rally that will be held at the Wyoming Capitol at 6 p.m., Thursday. They should keep a head count of the number of their constituents protesting the sale of our public land and compare that with the number of Wyomingites carrying signs that say, “Hell yeah. Sell it all.”
If they can’t read the room, and they call the protest a silly overreaction, I guess they can wait to look at the numbers in the next election. The choice is theirs.
But smart politicians who can sense their neighbors’ anger, and who are willing to stand their ground against bone-headed ideas like privatizing Wyoming’s public land, can smell political blood in the water. They’re flexing their muscles to run against our complacent incumbents. Here endeth the lesson.

I’m with you, Rod. If they go through with this, they’ve lost my vote.
Surely they realize they won’t get re-elected.
Utah has 22,000,000 acres of public lands if Trump and Lee want to sell that I’m good with it. But don’t touch anything in Wyoming. Many sources say that they are going to sell the land back to the states. But I do not believe this is true.
They get the OK to sell it and then they will sell it to their billionaire buddies
The person responsible was not Trump, he goes by the name of Sen. Mike Lee. This was his idea, not sure why we want to put the blame elsewhere but it was Sen.Mike Lee of Utah. He wrote the bill not Trump . Trump can issue an executive order, but he cannot issue a bill. He can ask for many things but he can not make a bill.
Why do u think, I am moving to chile , wyoming outdoors, 100 years ago,
People have a low opinion of Congress because of shenanigans like this. If their hearing does not improve, it is time to find someone with better listening skills!
The dastardly Wyoming contingency in D.C. is getting a lot of attention but don’t forget our closer to home feckless ones of the UnFreedom Caucus who’d love to rid the public of their lands. Unhinged John Bear, Rachel Whatever Williams and the heart mtn rube himself, Madam Tim French, etc etc would love to stick it to you also. The enemy isn’t necessarily over seas but sometimes your neighbor. KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF of OUR PUBLIC LANDS, you fleabags!
Regardless on what side of the aisle you stand, a common sense person can easily see that we have a corrupt administration that’s infatuated with dictators and oligarchs and white collar criminals. Trump would sell popcorn at his mother’s funeral and giving away public lands at pennies to the dollar value to enrichen his cronies at the expense of everyday Americans ain’t no big thing. Here in Wyoming, he’s had a lot of support from the Sell-out 3, Barrasso, Lummis and Hageman. Yep, the same people who hold those fake and scripted town hall events in the guise of listening to us. So, yes, we know that the White House is corrupt so the next question is, what was in it for the Sell-out 3 to betray and sheet on our citizens? What were they promised? It’s obvious that they don’t work for Wyoming so the logical conclusion is dough, bread, moolah, $$$, money. Hageman already made a swing at stealing Wyoming water with Denver entrepreneur Aaron Billion a few years ago and in liar fashion, denied it even though there’s damning proof in black and white. She sure as hell didn’t do it for free. Follow the money and I think you’ll find that the Sell-out 3 had much to gain monetarily at the expense of not only the people of Wyoming but the Citizens of the USA.
If our delegation bothers to pay attention to the rally on Thursday, they’ll say that they’re just “paid protesters”. Heaven forbid that Wyoming citizens would stand up for what they believe is right. Rod said it best. “Read the room”.
Rod, I think it may be too late for our DC three. The Weasel, who’s all about photo ops with the orange chimp along with clueless Cynthia and that smirky-liar Hag have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are a scurrilous bunch that attempted to sellout to the People of Wyoming. The People will not forget and Hag, you’re first come primary 2026.
Rod has written one of his best
Thanks for expressing the feelings of our Wyoming populace so succinctly! I have sent emails to our Congressmen, and will continue to do so until the last vote on this matter!
Thanks Rod. I haven’t been involved at all in politics until the last few years so I’m talking out my……
Seems to me like their careers in politics are already over.
We’re with you, Wyoming – here in Oregon, we feel the same way. Hands off our public land!
Senator Mike Lee of Utah is the one with “zeal” to sell our public lands.
This “zeal” seems to be prevalent with Utah “representatives”, as 8 years ago Jason Chaffetz tried the exact same bill. And resigned within months of it’s defeat by an unlikely alliance of hunters and environmentalists, just like today.

chaffetz didn’t have the backing of the majority of the GOP like Lee does this time around. wyoming’s three stooges overwhelmingly support the current proposal. they should follow chaffetz’s example, along with lee
Idaho and MT Republicans opposed last week. Lee’s attachment was first changed and now is as good as dead.
Elected Wyoming Republicans all must have Cheney DNA either naturally or artificially intertwined with theirs. Worse than worthless.
There is something fishy going on in Utah, nobody else is pushing this garbage.
it’d be interesting to know what public lands the mormon church is interested in buying.
Selling our public lands should be a close political death for any politician that even mentions it. Just like eliminating social security or medicare is currently. We really need to start being more careful as to who we vote for.
